WWE sometimes comes up with some amazing storylines. Remember when The Nexus debuted four years ago on RAW and tore the WWE ringside area apart? CM Punk was the next superstar who broke the proverbial glass ceiling with one of the greatest promos in the history of professional wrestling, and went on to hold the WWE title for a record 434 days – the longest championship reign in the past 25 years!
Daniel Bryan rose to superstardom, when the fans forced the WWE management to put the Yes – man in the main event of WrestleMania 30, where he completed his fairytale journey by winning the WWE World Heavyweight championship at the showcase of the immortals!
There was a time this year when the fans enjoyed the product the WWE was putting out. Back in January, with The Wyatt Family running rampant and The Shield turning face, the fans were heard chanting “This is awesome” week in and week out. Unfortunately, that has all stopped.
When you turn back the clock and wonder why that happened, the answer is quite obvious. Daniel Bryan is injured, and has been put on the shelf, while CM Punk quit the WWE and has since retired from professional wrestling. The Shield was disbanded and The Wyatt Family is no longer the menacing, terrorizing force it once was. Like all the flames that were eventually put out by the WWE management, one of the main reasons for that happening is the former WWE World Heavyweight champion, John Cena.
John Cena’s history with The Wyatt Family
Earlier this year, WWE was pushing The Wyatts as legitimate monsters, and sure enough, the WWE Universe loved everything Bray Wyatt did. From playing mind games with Cena to turning the 15 time world champion’s fans against him, Bray Wyatt should’ve been “the one” to have made Cena give up. In a perfect world, Wyatt is the Lex Luthor to John Cena’s Superman gimmick. With the fans turning on Cena and siding with Bray Wyatt, WWE should’ve put the cult leader over. But in the end, Wyatt was just another casualty in Cena’s way, as he fell victim to Cena’s ‘fight against the odds’ persona. If the master of Thuganomics had to come out looking strong, Bray was the wrong opponent for John, as he built a head of steam going into the feud.
The reason for me revisiting the past is because of what happened this past week on RAW. It makes sense for the leader of CeNation to prove to his fans that he can bounce back after the thrashing he received at the hands of the new WWE World Heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, but his opponents made little to no sense.
Not only did the former champ pulverize a hapless Bray Wyatt, but he got the upper hand over Rowan and Harper – the two monsters in the WWE today! Cena dominated the trio, and hit his signature move on all the three to end the show. If WWE had to pick three random people in the locker room, it would’ve still made more sense than feeding The Wyatts to Cena.
Why it was a bad move by the WWE
It looks like every time Chris Jericho puts someone over, they’re booked to look weak, and are destined to go nowhere. When Jericho put Fandango over at WrestleMania, everyone saw it as Fandango’s golden ticket to superstardom. Today, Fandango has become an afterthought. Jericho did the same with Bray Wyatt at SummerSlam, as Wyatt came out looking stronger than ever. Jericho even put Wyatt over during a promo, saying Wyatt was unlike anything he had ever faced. When one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and a future hall of famer puts a talent over in such a fashion, it is seen as the ‘nod’, which would imply that the youngster is set to receive the push of his career. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, as the sadistic trio was booked to look weak at the hands of the 15 time world champion.
As I said, I don’t have any problems with the way WWE booked John. After being pummeled by the beast incarnate at SummerSlam, WWE had to book Cena strongly. But the opponents they chose for him, and the way he brushed them off with ease doesn’t speak too well regarding the long term vision of the company, or their unwillingness to put over talent other than their marquee name. We can still hope that Bray doesn’t end up like Fandango, but if history is any indication, it might once again be similar to what happened with Nexus and Fandango.
