Interview with Sandeep Maity: "I want to compete for another 10 years"

Sandeep Maity

Sandeep Maity first took to the sport of climbing as a 14-year-old and ever since then has been doing it for almost 10 years. Speaking to Sportskeeda in a telephonic interview, the 23-year-old spoke about a variety of topics, from his early starts to the climbing World Cup next month.

Excerpts:

Beginnings in climbing

A: Our school team would go for competitions and I loved travelling. I was 14 when I started climbing and after two years I started to enjoy the sport.

Inspiration

A: When I began climbing, there was a workshop happening in IMS . It was organised by the Times of India. There were a few members of the Indian team present there as well.Watching them, I felt that I needed to be like them. There were 3 Indian players at that event.

Most challenging task

When I went to Singapore last year, and in the last minute I couldn't get the required funds and in the end, I had to myself figure it out.

Tokyo Olympics recommendation

Yes. it was quite a boost. I think more of such initiative will help it grow further. Now hardly people know about it.I am just 23 and I want to compete for 10 more years.

Getting the funds for the climbing World Cup at home

I think people are working hard and they are passionate and I am confident that they will make it.
