5 Underrated AEW Tag Teams in 2021

Tag team wrestling in 2021 - a subject of ongoing debate.

Promotions like AEW place a heavy emphasis on it, while others are strictly focused on singles acts. The fans, on the other hand, have made it clear that tag team wrestling is not only wanted, but needed.

The issue with tag team-heavy companies like AEW is that it is often difficult to find the television time available to focus on tag team programs, let alone ensure that all of the teams have an equal chance to have a decent push.

As 2021 comes to an end, we take a look at the AEW tag team division and the teams that are flying under the radar and hopefully see better success in 2022.

#5 The Hybrid 2

Angelico and Jack Evans received a decent mid-card push when AEW first launched in 2019, but seem to have been relegated to AEW Dark and AEW Dark Elevation.

With a good combination of ground wrestling and high-flying moves, they would be better utilized in quality feuds and matches on the main shows, Dynamite and Rampage. Additionally, with all the factions in AEW, the one that really needs to be disbanded is the Hardy Family Office, as it has no clear mission and is just a faction for the sake of a faction.

Unfortunately, Hybrid 2's affiliation with the faction is doing more harm than good, as they have become lost in the shuffle.

As their own entity, they could be matched up against any of the top-tier tag teams in AEW.

They may not be tag team championship caliber right now, but as heels or babyfaces, there's still an opportunity to build them into something more than they are now.

#4 AEW Men of the Year - Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page

If you followed Ethan Page's run before signing with AEW, you know about his time in Impact Wrestling. His tag team with Josh Alexander was one of the top acts over the past couple of years.

So, when AEW paired him with Scorpio Sky and Dan Lambert, one had to think that they would quickly rise up the ranks together.

It hasn't played out that way as of yet, as the company has chosen to immerse the duo in faction wars with the Inner Circle. And most recently, they've decided to push Sky in a singles feud with Sammy Guevara.

Once the program with Guevara is done, the Men of the Year have much more to give in the tag team division and a title program with the Lucha Brothers would be great, both from a storyline perspective and the in-ring product.

#3 2Point0

When the WWE released Jeff Parker and Matt Lee earlier in the year, it was eyebrow raising as the duo seemed to be steadily climbing the NXT ranks.

Their signing with AEW was welcomed by the fans as an opportunity to show the WWE a missed opportunity. It hasn't panned out yet, as the team has been mired in a feud with Eddie Kingston. Kingston is one of the better mid-card acts, but they've been focusing too much on Daniel Garcia and not enough on the team.

Their mic skills and ring work are solid and while they could still stay involved in the Kingston feud, next year is hopefully a breakout year for the team.

#2 The Acclaimed

This is a team that's just waiting to break out in AEW. The fans are behind them and their mic act is over. It just hasn't translated to meaningful matches and feuds beyond appearances on Dark and Elevation.

If they were to be pushed more steadily on the main shows, they could easily be players in the championship picture, with almost guaranteed exciting factors.

In addition, either Max Castor and/or Anthony Bowens could be breakout singles stars if they so choose.

#1 FTR - Former AEW Tag Team Champions

FTR was pegged as being the needed piece to the puzzle to bring the AEW tag team division to the next level. Their pay-per-view match with the Young Bucks was considered among today's wrestling fans to be a dream match.

Since that match, which saw the Bucks win the title, it almost seems like FTR has been demoted to a nominal role within the Pinnacle faction, while often taking losses to makeshift teams such as Sting and Darby Allin.

It looks like they are starting to re-emerge as major players again, given their recent feud with the Lucha Brothers and stint with the AAA tag team titles. Hopefully 2022 provides opportunities for them to continue to rise to the top.
