Keyontae Johnson describes his scary collapse on court: "I was in a coma for three days"

Keyontae Johnson's comeback story has resurfaced in recent times. When Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field in the NFL, the sporting world watched in horror. Thankfully, he is on the road to recovery and is doing well. In the days that followed the incident, journalists and media outlets said this had never been seen before.

Perhaps this was the case in the NFL, but not in other sports. Projected SEC player of the year Keyontae Johnson once entered a match with the notion of it being any other game. But on December 12, 2020, the former Florida Gators star collapsed on the court.

Speaking to Jeff Goodman, Johnson recalled the incident:

"I just remember going into the game, I think I just hit a side three from the right wing. Came back down the floor, I got the lob and then everything went black.
"They had me in a coma in Tallahassee for three days. They said as soon as I landed in Gainesville, I woke up. My dad came in and said 'you finally woke up,' they would not let me see the video."

Keyontae Johnson has a fresh start with the Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State v Iowa State

In March, Johnson was accused of sexual assault. This came after an alleged encounter with another student at the University of Florida when he was intoxicated at a pool party. This pushed Johnson over the edge to reset and restart at another school, and Kansas State welcomed him with open arms.

The road to recovery was over two-and-a-half years long, but Johnson was finally cleared to play in September.

Before he collapsed, Keyontae Johnson was averaging 19.7 points and six rebounds a game. This season, he is averaging 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Johnson and the Kansas State Wildcats just lost a tough conference game against Iowa State by four points on the road. Johnson finished with 15 points, ten rebounds, two blocks and an uncharacteristic five turnovers.

Maybe he was looking past the matchup or had a bad game. But one thing is for certain, Keyontae Johnson will be ready to take on the Florida Gators at home on Saturday.
