Facebook, Twitter, Instagram have all become an integral part of modern day sports. Previously, footballers used the tool to interact with their fans and voice their opinions without mincing words. In a world of commercialization, most footballers these days use their huge fan following to market their own brands and please their sponsors on social media.

With most of their accounts being handled by PR firms, we see more carefully constructed and well-worded posts which hardly give us any insights into their lives. Only a handful of footballers like Michy Batshuayi, Benjamin Mendy entertain their fans with hilarious tweets and posts. Much unlike the others who bore us with their standard "Great performance from the lads, three points in the bag" and so on.

Back when footballers used social media as free birds like most of us do, football and twitter really did come together to form a hilarious combo. Michy Batshaui's twitter handle needs no introduction. He is the lord of the internet. Some of his tweets are downright hilarious.

Back to 2015/16, Michy enjoyed a stellar season with Olympique de Marseille which piqued interest from Chelsea and a host of other clubs. Despite racking up 9 assists, EA Sports gave him a mere 59 score on his passing attributes for the 2016 edition of the Ultimate Team video game. Here's what the batman had to say about it:

#8 Victor Anichibe

We'd like to thank Victor Anichebe for busting the myth that professional footballers write their own tweets. We now know social media accounts are managed by expensive PR companies these days, but Anichebe still managed to mess up with a simple copy-paste job.

This one was back in 2016 when Sunderland were off to their worst ever start. The Nigerian forward had played just 13 minutes since joining Sunderland as a free agent, but that did not stop him tweeting his support for his team following the devastating last-minute defeat to West Ham United.

How can any top 10 article not feature the G.O.A.T that is Cristiano Ronaldo?

This was the greatest unintentionally funny tweet in human history. This belongs in a museum.

Ronaldo was actually launching a CR7 line of underwear the following month. As a promotion for the boys' line, Ronaldo's CR7 brand held a contest on Facebook where the participants were to Upload their best, craziest and funniest fan image showing their love for CR7 to win a trip to meet Cristiano Ronaldo and seen him play a match!

So the Juve striker wasn't actually thanking his followers for photos of boys in underwear; he was thanking folks for participating in his contest which simply showcased their love for him.

What was Rooney's greatest contribution to football? His overhead goal versus City? His celebration which made it to FIFA? They'll probably slot in at number 2 and number 3 respectively. At number one is his most impressive contribution - his twitter banter. Like Rooney, we'll just let his tweets do the talking.
