After the hugely successful WrestleMania in 1985, WWE decided to expand upon its PPV ideology. WrestleMania III sold more than 90,000 tickets followed by the promotion announcing another annual event in the form of Survivor Series later in 1987.
The promotion did not stop there as it went on to announce two more events the next year. While Royal Rumble was announced as an event for January, the only slot left for quarterly PPVs was around August. This spot was filled by the announcement of SummerSlam.
These four events are now widely referred to as The Big Four PPVs of WWE and sometimes The Big Five including Money in the Bank. The first SummerSlam was held on August 29, 1988, at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The 1992 edition of the event saw more than 80,000 people gathered in the crowd. It is the most attended WWE event besides WrestleMania. SummerSlam has been dubbed “The Biggest Party of the Summer” and also the second biggest event of WWE. However, in 2021, it was marketed as the biggest event of the year and also managed to outsell WrestleMania 37, which was affected due to COVID-19.
