Kansas City Chiefs free agent signings 2023: How do Andy Reid and Co. go about stocking up for Super Bowl defense?

The Kansas City Chiefs had a 2023 NFL season to remember, as they finished the season with their second Super Bowl win in four years. The Chiefs were incredible, and their players also stacked up some individual awards. Patrick Mahomes won the MVP award. Travis Kelce earned an All-Pro nod, and the team won the ultimate honor at the end of the season.

However, in Kansas City, the Chiefs do not rest on laurels; instead, they chase the next one. Hence, coach Andy Reid has been hard at work in building a roster that could compete for everything next season. We've been paying rapt attention, and without further ado, let's show you how Reid has gone about stocking up for the 2023 season.

#1 Jawaan Taylor, OT

From protecting Trevor Lawrence to guarding Patrick Mahomes against the harsh hits of overzealous defenders, Juwaan Taylor is living a strenuous life. The former Jacksonville Jaguars OT signed a four-year, $80 million deal with the Chiefs and looks ready to go.

With this signing, the Kansas City Chiefs have a new starting left tackle to replace Brown, who played two seasons for the Chiefs, the last as their franchise player. However, the two parties couldn't agree on a long-term contract, and the Chiefs opted not to tag Brown again, leaving them with a significant need.

Taylor has been almost exclusively a right tackle for the Jaguars, so he must switch to the other side of the line. The Chiefs also need a new starting right tackle after losing Andrew Wylie in free agency to the Washington Commanders but have an available replacement in backup Lucas Niang.

#2 Mike Edwards, Safety

There are no permanent foes in the NFL, as your opposition today might be your teammate tomorrow. That's what happened with Mike Edwards, as the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety has joined the Kansas City Chiefs, a team he helped put away in the 2021 Super Bowl game.

Edwards is signing a one-year deal that will help him prove his worth and get the chance to win his second Super Bowl ring. Edwards gives the Chiefs a veteran presence who could play a lot as a nickel safety, even if Byran Cook starts.

#3 Drue Tranquill, LB

With another one-year contract with a proven performer on a postseason-caliber team, the Kansas City Chiefs aren't playing around in this title defense. On a one-year deal, the Chiefs signed former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker, Drue Tranquill. who plays just like his name, as he's an elite performer with a lot of poise at the LB position.

The Kansas City Chiefs love a solid linebacker, as over the years, they've drafted the likes of Willie Gay, Nick Bolton and Leo Chenal. Adding Tranquill would be instrumental for the young group, as they will get a chiseled veteran to show them the ropes in one of the league's most tasking positions.

Tranquill will not be required to jump in and start from day one. His presence on the field will be significant, but his experience in the locker room would be most valuable. Andy Reid knows what he's doing, and the rest of the league should be terrified.
