Trenton Simpson 2023 NFL Draft Projection: How high could Clemson Tigers LB go?

Trenton Simpson, a linebacker at Clemson, is one of the best prospects in any position heading into the 2023 NFL draft. He recorded 12 tackles for a loss and 6.0 sacks in 2021, becoming the first Tiger since 2015 to have 0.5 sacks in five straight games.

Few draft picks have as much potential to play numerous spots on the field as Simpson does. There are many spots on the field where Simpson may line up. He has been predicted to fall to the second round in some mock drafts, but he shouldn't drop that much.

Simpson is a candidate for at least one team in the first round, as many teams need a young linebacker. He's expected to get picked anywhere in the second half of the first round, based on draft experts' predictions. Depending on how the first round goes, the Pittsburgh Steelers may hold off on selecting Simpson with the No. 32 overall choice.

Trenton Simpson measured a robust 6' 2", weighed 235 pounds and performed 25 bench press reps at 225 pounds during the 2023 Combine, but his finest performance was in the 40. With a 4.43 40-yard dash and a 1.55 10-yard split, Simpson astounded the audience.

What are Trenton Simpson’s strengths and weaknesses?

Trenton Simpson can rush passers, play around the box and block passing options. Due to his rapid trigger, he frequently finds himself close to the ball. Simpson is always prepared to fill the slot and closes swiftly.

Contrary to what his physique might suggest, he's much quicker and more energetic and has the frame to add additional high-quality weight. He showed off NFL-caliber abilities when Clemson used him outside to pressure the passer and inside as an off-ball linebacker.

Trenton Simpson must develop his alertness and play evaluations to reach the next level. He occasionally makes mistakes with misdirection. He can also find it difficult to predict where the ball will be played.

Simpson can approach the football from better angles while it's being run at. He could pursue and battle with some of the NFL's top linebackers if he chooses better routes to the ball. Although he has a decent range, his ability to chase may be limited.

At the pro level, he must also work on shedding blocks. Although he doesn't play poorly against the run, he could do much better if he focuses on shedding better.
