3 reasons why Kofi Kingston is set for a long run with the WWE Championship

"Kofi Kingston will become the WWE Champion and he would go on to defeat Daniel Bryan for the title at WrestleMania 35". At the start of 2019, if someone had said this statement, it would have been considered outrageous and borderline stupid. After all, despite 11 years of sheer dedication and commitment towards WWE, along with 15 championships, Kofi was never seen as someone worthy of one day becoming a WWE Champion at 'The Grandest Stage Of Them All'.

Yet here we are in April 2019, and Kofi Kingston is the reigning WWE Champion after he trounced over Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35. Nonetheless, doubters now theorize that Kofi Kingston would end up just being a transitional champion and his reign is not going to last for a long period of time.

However, there are certain factors that are going in favour of Kofi Kingston, which give an indication that he might be in for a long run with the WWE Championship. What are they? Let us take a look.

#3 Kofi Kingston has proven himself to be a good enough main event star

Even though prior to WrestleMania 35, Kofi had been labelled as a bonafide tag team specialist owing to his stint with The New Day, it must always be remembered that he has been a 4-time Intercontinental Champion and a 3-time United States Champion. In the limited opportunities given to him as a solo performer, he never failed to impress the fans with his in-ring skills and charisma.

In the most serendipitous fashion at Elimination Chamber 2019, Kofi Kingston was given a second lease of life as a solo performer and he grabbed the 'brass ring' with both hands. His performances leading up to WrestleMania 35 incited fan support that had only been seen for his opponent, Daniel Bryan, in the build up to his historic anointment at WrestleMania 30.

At WrestleMania 35, in one of the most emotional and heart-warming moments in the storied history of WrestleMania, Kofi Kingston finally fulfilled his life-long dream as he won the WWE Championship in the presence of his family and friends. The response was simply overwhelming. That is what WWE ideally wants from its main event stars: to incite overwhelming emotions and make them feel over the moon. In that regards, Kofi Kingston has definitely ticked this box.

#2 The Big Dog is here, but his time is not now

Roman Reigns is now on SmackDown Live, but he needs to wait before pursuing the top prize

Roman Reigns is undoubtedly one of the biggest star attractions in the WWE and he has been 'The Face of WWE' for quite some time. Due to negative fan reactions and absurd booking decisions, his run with the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship has always been marred with criticism. However, all this changed when in October 2018, 'The Big Dog' was forced to vacate his Universal Championship after it was revealed that he had leukemia. This tragic real life situation squashed all the negative reactions, and fans and fellow wrestlers all showed their overwhelming support for Roman Reigns.

In February 2019, he made a triumphant comeback to the squared circle with overwhelming crowd support. At WrestleMania 35, he defeated Drew McIntyre in a rather predictable result. During the Superstar Shake-Up, Roman Reigns was drafted to SmackDown Live, with the objective of improving its ratings.

WWE would want to maintain the positive crowd response for Reigns, as he is set to be a star performer for the blue brand. Furthermore, at some point, he would most probably become the WWE Champion.

However, that does not mean a title run in the near future. Considering the current popularity of Kofi Kingston, any superstar who goes on to dethrone Kingston would invariably become one of the most bemoaned figures in the roster. WWE would definitely not want to put someone like Roman Reigns in that position.

#1 The eventual implosion of The New Day

Kofi Kingston's journey to WrestleMania 35 was not just about Kofi's 11 years of hard work. It was also about the friendship and brotherhood shared between Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods.

Their friendship was put to a real test by Vince McMahon on the March 26, 2019 episode of Smackdown Live. In order to give Kofi Kingston the opportunity to face Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35, Xavier Woods and Big E were required to face 5 other tag teams in a Gauntlet match, in which they emerged victorious against all odds.

Since July 2014, The New Day has been an integral part of the WWE programming. It has immensely benefited all the three superstars in building up their credibility as performers, which could, later, provide a launch pad for a singles push. Kofi Kingston is just a prime example of that.

As they say, however, 'All good things must come to an end'. Just like Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods also deserve a flourishing singles career, which is not possible without the disbandment of The New Day. It was heavily speculated that Big E or Xavier Woods would turn on Kofi Kingston at WrestleMania 35 and would cost him the WWE Championship. Fortunately, this did not happen.

WWE may have planned this for a future date to set up this personal rivalry. These plans may have been nixed due to the knee injury sustained by Big E, which has put him out of action for the time being. However, whenever he makes a comeback, we should not be surprised if the WWE decides to pull the trigger soon after. Till it happens, it is necessary that Kofi Kingston remains the WWE Champion for the sheer emotional impact it would have on the WWE Universe.
