5 booking decisions that prove Vince McMahon is still a genius

Vincent Kennedy McMahon.

Whether you love or hate the man, you have to acknowledge the fact that he is a pioneer of pro wrestling and has turned once was a carnival sideshow into one of the most profitable industries in the world. Of course, he did that by putting all his viable competition out of business and monopolizing sports entertainment, but think about what monumental feat that is.

Seriously though. Think off all the blood sweat and tears Mr. McMahon and his family has endured in order to defeat every challenge put in front of them. Challenges that included WCW, TNA and now even AEW, who are hot off Double Or Nothing. If nothing else, McMahon deserves a round of applause for his accomplishments.

With that being said, however, the WWE Universe doesn't seem to want to give the devil his due and want to instead focus on the bad decisions that WWE has made over the course of the last few months. Of course, there's nothing wrong with this, but it also helps paint an inaccurate picture of Mr. McMahon.

#5 Reality-based storytelling

Ad
Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey are only two examples of WWE's great reality-based storytelling.

Vince McMahon may not have started the idea of reality-based storytelling, but he has taken the idea and revolutionized it over the last couple of years. In fact, between The Rousey-Lynch-Flair storyline that main-evented the road to WrestleMania 35 and with Kofimania running wild around the same time, it's easy to see why McMahon is a genius.

Think about it! Vince McMahon knew this kind of storytelling would strike a chord with his audience and make them less able to tell what was the reality and what was fiction. He also knew that bringing in real life elements into his storylines would help the fans invest in the product further, which has worked to some effect.

#4 The 24/7 belt

Despite its name, The 247 belt was a good idea on WWE's part.

Let's be honest here.

It may not have had the best design or even the best name when it was revealed by Mick Foley on Monday Night Raw, but WWE has taken far too much crap over their attempt to insert comedy into their weekly show. Of course, a lot of that has to do with the WWE Universe wanting the Hardcore Title back.

With that being said, the belt serves its purpose of comedic relief, inserts a chaos element into the picture, gives a number of undercard talents something to do and is fun to follow on social media. If nothing else, the WWE Universe made too much of the belt's faults and didn't sit and consider what the true intentions of the strap were.

If they would have done that, they would have realized that it wasn't meant to the Hardcore belt reincarnated, but a chance to give mid-carders some air time and insert some comedic relief into the show. Beyond that, it again gives that chaotic atmosphere and will continue to do so if WWE can come up with creative situations for the belt.

#3 Pushing Lacey Evans

Lacey Evans is proof that Vince McMahon has an eye for talent.

Another thing the WWE Universe needs to be honest about is the fact that while Lacey Evans originally looked like a one-dimensional character, she has more than proven that she has a solid position as the future of the company. Of course, she didn't beat Becky Lynch Money in the Bank and has thus dropped down the card a bit, but that doesn't limit her potential.

In fact, between her military background, fiery presence on the microphone and her ability in the ring, Vince McMahon is going to put her back into the title picture before long. With that in mind, Evans is another perfect example of Vince McMahon seeing a diamond in the rough when it comes to characters and evolving it into something special.

Look at this way. Everyone in the WWE Universe deadpanned Lacey Evans as a sideshow act when she arrived in January but were quickly left eating her words when she delivered a women's rights to Becky Lynch the night after WrestleMania. If nothing else, Vince McMahon proved everyone wrong, created a star and maybe even helped launch the career of a future women's revolution pioneer.

#2 The wildcard rule

Vince McMahon's wild card rule is a work of genius!
Ad

Why does everyone hate the wild card rule?

Much like the 24/7 belt that made its debut after WrestleMania 35, it was probably due to the fact that it wasn't the way the WWE Universe wanted the company to go about things. In fact, the fans were probably hoping for a full out end to the brand split, especially with the Fox sports deal coming up, which made anything less than that undesirable.

Unfortunately for WWE, that's exactly what happened and the wildcard rule was critically panned by pretty much anyone. With that being said, however, the rule has brought on a lot of surprising moments on Raw and SmackDown Live, while also allowing for a few dream matches to take place as well.

In the end, it's not what fans wanted, but it was something that injected some excitement back into the pro wrestling product. If nothing else, that's exactly what McMahon set out to do with a rule like this and it seemed to achieve that goal. Interestingly enough, however, the WWE Universe still only cares about a fix-all solution to WWE's problems and isn't willing to take it one step at a time.

#1 Him versus Roman Reigns

Is Roman Reigns Vince McMahon's greatest creation?
Ad

It may have taken years, several failed pushes, a botched Royal Rumble or two, but Vince McMahon finally established Roman Reigns as the top dog in the WWE. The move was no easy feat, especially since WWE Universe resisted every single step of the way, but it became harder and harder to do so when he made Reigns a tweener.

Interestingly enough, when Reigns became a tweener in the months before SummerSlam of 2018, it became almost impossible to boo him. With that being said and Vince McMahon never giving up on Roman Reigns as his top guy and the leader of the company for the foreseeable future, it's obvious that this is his biggest accomplishment.

Think about it! Think how much McMahon had to overcome, all the boos he had to suppress, all the times he had to reunite The Shield and he finally did it! If nothing else, McMahon is a master manipulator when it comes to his audience and that is exactly why he should continue to be WWE's primary booker for the foreseeable future.
