Edge's return at Royal Rumble

5 dream matches for Edge following his shock WWE return

It's official: After his sensational and shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble, the 'Rated R Superstar' is back on the active WWE roster.

Having reportedly signed a three-year, $9 million deal, it's pretty safe to assume that Edge will be a regular face on either Monday Night Raw or Friday Night Smackdown (it's looking like Raw for the moment) in the following months and years to come. Assuming no nagging neck injuries rear their ugly head again, there's no reason Edge can't reimmerse himself in the wrestling lifestyle as a regular in-ring performer for WWE.

Looking in better shape that he arguably ever has in his entire career, the man also known as Adam Copeland gave a great showing in the Rumble, lasting almost to the very end, with absolutely no ring rust in sight. Given that he's been out of the ring for almost a decade, this comes as a bit of a shock. Who knows what he's still to accomplish?

But while Randy Orton may have been the man to set his viper fangs into his former friend first, there are many WWE fans who can't wait to see the WWE Hall of Famer mix it up with the new generation of wrestling talent who arrived on the scene not long after his departure.

Edge himself rattled off a few names on this week's Monday Night Raw, showing he is indeed interested in challenging some new faces. Knowing that there's been so much new talent introduced in the nine years he's been away from the company, it makes all the sense in the world that Edge would want to accustomise himself with a string of potential worthy foes he was unfortunate enough to miss.

With this in mind, here are five picks for dream matches now that Edge has returned home:

#5 Seth Rollins

Rollins is one of WWE's top names

There's a very good argument to be made that Seth Rollins is the closest thing we've had to the Rated R Superstar since his departure.

Exceptional and varied skill in the ring, great on the microphone and the know-how to produce top quality matches in both singles and tag team contests. Which is what makes a fantasy match between the two men all the more mouthwatering.

Much like Edge was a workhorse for the company back in the day, Seth Rollins has devoted himself to his craft and given more of himself to the squared circle than perhaps any other current WWE superstar in recent years.

Both men are world championship calibre and multiple-time former world champs in their own right. And both caused seismic shockwaves through the wrestling world with their famous Money In The Bank cash-ins.

The question is... when all the talking is done, who comes out on top? The newly-christened Monday Night Messiah or the Ultimate Opportunist?

This has 'PPV Main Event' written all over it, and we can't wait.

#4 Mustafa Ali

Mustafa Ali has his old name back!

Mustafa Ali was undoubtedly one of the breakout stars of the past eighteen months.

With a string of impressive performances and victories under his belt, it was apparently planned for the Chicago native to wrestle Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania for the WWE title that year, before an unfortunate injury saw Kofi Kingston take his spot.

Kingston would go on to win the title, which must have hurt Ali on some level. But, his flexible, high-flying style could be the perfect gel for a returning Edge, who has sung Ali's praises on more than one occassion.

Edge would be going in with the size advantage, but let's be honest: In WWE, when did that ever matter? It would be a fast-paced, balls-to-the-wall clash with superkicks and spears galore. What's not to love?

Besides, having missed out on a spot in the Royal Rumble, leaving most fans bemused as to why such a talent would be dismissed completely, a dream match with one of his idols could be the perfect confidence and profile booster.

Here's hoping this one happens sooner rather than later.

#3 Kevin Owens

KO mania could be round the corner

When Kevin Owens burst onto the scene in NXT, he was a breath of fresh air that had been very much needed in WWE for a while.

He doens't look like a "typical WWE superstar" should look, and yet, he's one of the very best talents working in the business today.

The tenacity that saw him spend years in the indies, through NXT and into the main roster finally culminated with him winning the Universal Title and an impressive run to boot. This tenacity is what makes him a perfect fit for a feud with Edge. Both men carry the fire both in the ring and on the mic that's sure to ignite fans' interests.

Plus, with his hard hitting, no-nonsense style of wrestling, the former Universal champ would be in prime position to work a fantastic storyline centred around Edge's history of neck injuries (which is the direction the company seems to be going in right now, with dramatic effect).

#2 Roman Reigns

Reigns is the big dog of WWE now

Spears... Spears everywhere...

Roman Reigns' difficulty maintaining his position as the "top guy" in WWE has been marred with controversy since his push to the summit began over half a decade ago.

He never quite clicked with fans, who resented his obvious positioning as the company's new favourite son. His ability in the ring, however, spoke volumes.

Regularly recognised as one of the best wrestlers in the world today, despite fan trepidation, Roman's athleticism for a man of his size and mass is something to behold. Add to this a killer work ethic and you've got all the ingredients that makes a WWE superstar great.

That greatness is why so many fans can't wait to see him share a ring with Edge. One of the top names of the past vs one of the top names of the present makes for an intriguing mix.

Reigns would surely go in as the betting favourite, with age and size on his side. The fans, however, would firmly be in the corner of the Rated R Superstar. If Edge wants to stake his claim to still being a worthy contender at 46 years old, a victory over the "Big Dog" would do just that.

#1 Finn Balor

Finn has exploded back into NXT

He might have made his way back to the black and gold brand, but that doesn't mean a match between Finn Balor and Edge is any less possible.

A literal dream match in every sense of the phrase, pitting two of the most popular and talented performers of their respective eras against each other is a delicious thought.

Surprisingly, while Balor will no doubt be seen as the "young lion" of the two, there's actually only eight years seperating the two men, with Balor having spent much of his career honing his craft in Japan.

Both with mountains of charisma and ressonance with the fans, the atmosphere in the arena would be electric and may even eclipse that of Balor's meeting with old foe AJ Styles from a few years ago. AJ would have been included in this list, but his Royal Rumble injury may end up sidelining him for a while.

Nevertheless, when these two meet there would be a single fan sitting down.

Ladder match, anyone?
