5 female wrestlers who have had a troubled past

When you're a WWE Superstar, a lot of pressure comes with the position, especially if you're on the women's roster.

Wrestlers have to constantly represent the company and must keep it in the back of their head at all times. Gone are the days of kayfabe where they could lash out at someone in public just because they're a bad girl on television.

Along with the obvious stress of being a WWE Superstar comes dealing with memories from your past. Many of our favourite WWE female Superstars have had to overcome some serious obstacles along the way to greatness.

Some of these scars they must overcome are due to childhood trauma and others occurred later on in life. But whether the pain is mental or physical it still left a lasting impression that made them the strong women they are today.

Eva Marie entertained the masses as a WWE Superstar and OG cast member on Total Divas. WWE apparently had big plans for her but one thing or another kept getting in the way.

Although she recently left WWE, Eva still maintains a relationship with the company. She is proud of the work she did while employed in Vince's Circus of Suplexes and credits much of her fandom and success to the opportunities presented to her while with the company.

But before becoming the woman we all know her as today, Eva had to overcome some serious issues.

As a cast member of Total Divas, her past caught up with her. In an earlier episode of the series, Cameron called Eva out for posing for nude photographs before being signed to WWE.

Eva revealed that she is a recovering alcoholic which is why she doesn't drink to this day. She has dealt with the struggles of addiction for much of her life and it led her down a bad road for a period of time.

Thankfully, she was able to turn things around and refocus. Now she's reaping the benefits of all her hard work with her many film roles and media endeavours.

#2 AJ Lee

The Geek Goddess

AJ Lee dazzled fans during her time in the WWE. She played various roles while with the company, but every one of them had a uniqueness only AJ Lee could bring to the table.

Lee opened up about her bipolar disorder in her book "Crazy is My Superpower" where she elaborated about her constant struggles. But she never let her disorder define or hold her down. In a blog entry on her website in February 2017 she wrote:

"When I harnessed its seemingly uncontrollable might, I realized Bipolar disorder's powers could be used for good. My diagnosis didn't have to be an affliction. It could simply be the gift of extraordinary emotions. When a loved one hurt, I could feel their pain with every inch of my skin through my super human ability of empathy.

AJ's desire to succeed eventually brought her to the top of the mountain. Her perseverance was accompanied by a never ending desire to get what she wanted.

My passion-fueled soul convinced me to jump into life headfirst, without overthinking. When I was scared, my super-sized heart reminded me I could be invincible. When I doubted myself, my overachieving mind made me believe I was capable of flying. And when I desired something, there was not a person on earth who could hold me back. I could walk through fire if it meant making my dreams come true."

#3 Charlotte Flair

The Queen

"The Nature Girl" has been through many serious situations in her life. From her brother Reid's tragic death to her father's health crisis, Charlotte Flair survived it all and can tell the stories. But one story she didn't open up about until recently was how serious the situation with her first husband was.

In her new book "Second Nature: The Legacy Of Ric Flair And The Rise Of Charlotte," she opened up about her first husband's physical abuse as well as his drug addiction. She said her ex-husband would do drugs with her brother who later died of a drug overdose ,and he was like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality-wise.

Charlotte gave up a lot to be with her ex-husband as well, including a volleyball scholarship at Appalachian State, to be able to live with her ex-husband as he attended UNC-Chapel Hill. She wrote in her book about some of the bad points while living with her first husband, Riki Johnson.

"Riki started swinging at me like we were in a street fight. Over his screams, I could hear his fists hit my arms. I managed to block most of the punches, but one shot got me in the ribs. I began to gasp for air, but he didn't stop," Charlotte said. In another portion, she said: "Riki punched me right in the head. ...I think about that girl now, and it brings tears to my eyes. How did I get there? Why was this going on? Why wasn't I strong enough, brave enough, to end this?"

#4 Alexa Bliss

The Goddess Of WWE

Everyone knows "Little Miss Bliss" as the dominant force she is today. But many people might not realize she had to overcome a pretty serious problem early on in life.

While in high school, Alexa was a multi-sport athlete and took her training very seriously. She soon became a cheerleader at the University of Akron where she developed a rather concerning eating disorder.

She dropped forty pounds at one point in just over six weeks. She attacked her problem head on and still speaks about this issue today. She recently opened up about her battles with eating disorders on a mini-documentary for WWE's YouTube channel.

It's great to know she's doing much better now. But there was a time when things weren't so easy for "The Five Feet Of Fury".

#5 Mickie James

6-time WWE Women's Champ

Mickey James made her return to WWE when she ended up being the masked female assisting Alexa Bliss in retaining her SmackDown Women's Title.

Her unveiling was a surprise even if you thought it was coming. It was just good to have Mickie back in WWE. Since then James has worked hard to establish herself as a veteran force on WWE's women's roster.

But even before her first run with WWE, Mickie had to overcome some pretty awful obstacles. During a May 2016 interview with Vince Russo, she discussed how she was sexually abused by a family member from the ages of nine to fourteen-years-old.

This led to an awful battle with drug addiction and depression. Mickie James is thankfully doing much better now as she is a wife and mother as well as a WWE Superstar. But Mickie James had to deal with a lot before becoming Trish Stratus' crazed fan in 2005.
