Some interesting records were both set and broken at The Royal Rumble

5 interesting stats every fan needs to know coming out of WWE Royal Rumble 2020

The Road to WrestleMania has officially begun after it was revealed last night that Charlotte Flair and Drew McIntyre would be the two stars fighting for top Championships at WrestleMania in April.

There were four Championships on the line as part of the show but none of these changed hands as The Fiend, Andrade, Becky Lynch, and Bayley all walked out of Minute Maid Park with their respective titles.

The Royal Rumble is always a spectacle, as the WWE Universe tunes in with hopes that they will be shocked and surprised. The likes of Edge, MVP, Beth Phoenix, Santina Marella, and Molly Holly ensured that the crowd went home happy, whilst the rest of the WWE roster accomplished several interesting feats.

#5 Brock Lesnar creates history

Not only is Brock Lesnar now the joint record holder when it comes to Royal Rumble eliminations since he was able to eliminate 13 Superstars after what was one of the most dominating performances of all time, but he also made history.

Lesnar became the first man to eliminate 10 men consecutively in the history of the Royal Rumble match. This means that he is now the only person to accomplish such a feat, and given the men that he took out like Elias, John Morrison, MVP, Braun Strowman and Rey Mysterio, it's obvious that WWE sees Lesnar as the kind of star who can back up such a stat.

The Beast himself managed to eliminate every man who got in his way up until Drew McIntyre & Ricochet teamed up and managed to force the WWE Champion over the top rope. McIntyre then went on to win the match.

#4 Mercedes Martinez makes a unique statistic

There were several surprises in the Women's Royal Rumble match, including WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix, Molly Holly, Santino Marella, and Kelly Kelly. Whilst these were the most shocking of all the entrants, several women were added to the show from NXT including Mercedes Martinez, former NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler, Dakota Kai, Candice LeRae, Tegan Nox, Toni Storm, and Xia Li.

It was the perfect blend of past meets present but Mercedes Martinez's inclusion in the match means that she has become the first woman to appear in a battle royal for both AEW and WWE.

The Independent Wrestling legend was once linked to a move to All Elite Wrestling before signing with WWE just a few short weeks ago, but WWE decided to put her in the Rumble match despite her recent signing, which shows that they have some huge plans for her in the future.

Martinez appeared in the Casino Battle Royale at All Out, back in August 2019, before opting to join WWE earlier this year.

#3 Bianca Belair and Shayna Baszler break elimination record

The women's Royal Rumble match has only been presented on an annual basis for the past three years, but in that time both Michelle McCool and Charlotte Flair have been seen as the women who have eliminated the most opponents in the match with five from the first two Rumbles.

WWE turned Bianca Belair into a star as part of last night's show and allowed her to eliminate eight women before she met her end at the hands of Charlotte Flair.

Belair wasn't the only woman who was able to eliminate eight women in last night's match though since the Queen of Spades made her way to the ring in the number 30 spot and then eliminated eight women including Beth Phoenix, Toni Storm, Zelina Vega, Tegan Nox, and several others before she was the last woman in the ring for Charlotte Flair to pull out en route to victory.

On the other hand, Santina Marella is interestingly the first woman to eliminate herself from a women's Royal Rumble match.

#2 Royal Rumble entrance numbers

Drew McIntyre won the men's Royal Rumble last night after he entered the match from the 16th position for the second time in consecutive years. The Scottish star wasn't the only person to repeat their entry number last night since Sonya Deville became the first female wrestler to enter two Rumble matches from the same position when she came out at number 10.

Interestingly, neither of these stars has competed in as many Royal Rumble matches as Kofi Kingston but somehow the former WWE Champion is yet to draw the same number twice. Last night's showing was Kingston's 13th in a Rumble match but all of his entry numbers are unique.

Charlotte's win from 17 and Drew's win from 16 now mean that of the 30 possible numbers to draw in a Rumble match, 20 of them have seen a Superstar walk out victorious. Drew's double entrance at number 16 also means that there are just three entrance numbers that haven't been repeated by a star in the history of the Rumble, and they are 3, 25 and 27.

#1 Michael Cole has now commentated in four different decades

The Royal Rumble match may have created some interesting statistics last night, but it appears that the stars in the ring were not the only ones to make history. Michael Cole was at ringside to call the action as usual and created quite an impressive statistic by being a part of the show.

Michael Cole was signed by WWE back in 1997 but was originally a backstage interviewer before he was moved over to SmackDown when the show made its debut as a TV series in 1999. Michael Cole has since become one of WWE's longest-tenured employees to the point now where he is much more than just a commentator and often helps with creative control within the company as well.

During his time in WWE, Cole has commentated alongside several different stars including Jim Ross, Tazz, JBL, Jerry Lawler and Corey Graves. He's the only man to have the impressive statistic of commentating for WWE in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and now the 2020s.
