What's next for the New Day?

5 possible storylines for The New Day after the defeat at WrestleMania 36

The triple-threat SmackDown Tag Team Championship match at WrestleMania 36 ended in favor of The Miz and John Morrison. In an incredible bout, Morrison outlasted Kofi Kingston from The New Day and Jimmy Uso of The Usos to retain the gold.

The fans lauded WWE creative for their efforts because The Miz was reportedly sick, and the medical team would not clear him to take part in this marquee match. The backstage crew gave the three Superstars a lot of freedom to express themselves on an individual basis at the WWE Performance Center, and the trio did not disappoint.

Given how the match ended, it is likely that WWE might continue this three-way battle for the titles. Alternatively, they could introduce a new tag team in the title picture. Irrespective of what happens, the future is exciting for the SmackDown tag team division, and here are five ways WWE could book The New Day after their loss at the Showcase of Immortals.

#5 The rivalry continues, ends with a real tag team match at a future PPV

Big E did not participate in the match

As mentioned above, WWE used only one Superstar from each team because The Miz could not compete. This last-minute change could prompt the two losing teams to rush to the management and ask them for a real tag team match for the championships. Since the 'A-Lister' will likely recover soon, WWE could announce another triple threat match for the titles at a future pay-per-view event.

All three teams are immensely talented, and looking at the end of the bout at WrestleMania 36, it seems like WWE has the same plan in their minds. It would be a fantastic decision to continue this rivalry because all the tag teams deserve to be in the title picture on SmackDown.

#4 A tournament to determine new #1 contenders for the titles

The Miz and John Morrison have beaten every tag team on SmackDown

Because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, WWE might not want to risk The Miz's health. They might give the champions some time off the TV, and the best way to do that is by having John Morrison appear on the SmackDown after WrestleMania. He would then discuss how the champs have overcome every challenge they have faced so far.

And then, he would declare a tournament to determine the new #1 contenders for their championships. There are many tag teams on the Blue brand. Hence, the creative team could book a long tournament for this purpose. This move will not only provide The Miz a much-needed break, but it will also keep all the tag teams engaged.

The New Day would be one of the participants in this tourney. As they are one of the premier teams on SmackDown, they should at least reach the finals of the competition. WWE Creative should then make the best decision for the finals, but this way, they could keep Kofi Kingston and Big E busy doing what they do the best.

#3 Head to RAW in the Superstar Shakeup, battle with the RAW Tag Team Champions

Will the WWE Universe feel the power on Monday nights once again?

The Street Profits will put their RAW tag team championships on the line against Angel Garza and Austin Theory on the second night of WrestleMania 36. Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins are the favorites to retain the gold, but post 'Mania, they will need credible opponents for their titles.

The AOP is out with injury, while Seth Rollins and Murphy will also be off TV because the rumor mill has stated that Rollins will take some time off now.

Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson have lost too many matches to emerge as a robust force. In contrast, the makeshift team of Garza and Theory may not receive another opportunity to challenge for the belts.

Thus, in this situation, WWE could move The New Day from SmackDown to RAW during the Superstar Shake-up. The longest reigning tag team champions have been a part of the Blue brand for a long while now. It would be refreshing to see them back on Monday nights. Given that the Superstars of both the Street Profits and the New Day have fantastic mic skills, this feud should gain the fans' attention.

#2 Split up

Will Big E lose his cool on Kofi Kingston?
Ad

Many fans believe that The New Day is one of the most significant factions in WWE history. The trio of Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods has worked like a well-oiled machine, showing no signs of hatred against each other. There was a time when WWE tried to move Xavier Woods out of the faction when The New Day was feuding with the Wyatt Family. However, they did not book him to leave the group.

Later, it seemed like Big E would be the one who would embrace the dark side because Woods and Kingston had included Kevin Owens in their clan when the former NXT Champion was dealing with an injury. But, even that did not happen as Owens turned heel soon after.

Now that WWE has booked The New Day in so may other angles, they could finally consider breaking them up. Kofi lost the titles for the team last night, and this reason should be enough for Big E to turn on him. There could be a backstory that Big E tried to convince the former WWE Champion that being more muscular physically, he should be a part of the ladder match. But, Kingston would have declined his request citing that he is a big match player now, and he knows how to get the job done at WrestleMania.

With Woods out with an injury, the rivalry between Big E and Kofi Kingston could entertain the fans on SmackDown.

#1 Move to NXT

Will The New Day follow Charlotte Flair to NXT?
Ad

Charlotte Flair surprised everyone by picking a fight with the NXT Women's Champion, Rhea Ripley, after winning the 2020 Women's Royal Rumble match. The simple reason behind that move was that Flair had won the titles on RAW and SmackDown. She had battled the champions of the two brands, Bayley and Becky Lynch, multiple times. Thus, WWE wanted her to go after a new Superstar.

Just like Charlotte, The New Day has had a rivalry with almost every tag team on the main roster. They have won the tag team titles many times. However, they have never won the NXT Tag Team Championships. The BroserWeights, Matt Riddle, and Pete Dunne are holding the belts at the moment, and on the previous episode of NXT, Saurav Gurjar and Rinku Singh made their grand debuts.

The champs should have a brief rivalry with the debutantes, and till then, The New Day could have a dream rivalry with The Undisputed ERA or even the Forgotten Sons. They could also challenge someone from NXT UK. A move to the Black and Gold brand will open up a plethora of exciting opportunities for The New Day.

It will be intriguing to see if WWE pulls off this move because the experiments with Finn Balor and Charlotte have been successful.
