Will Rey Mysterio make his triumphant return at SummerSlam?

5 reasons Rey Mysterio may return at SummerSlam 2020

SummerSlam is only a handful of days away, and while the jury is still out on the potential of the event, one of the things that almost seems like a guarantee is the return of Rey Mysterio. With rumors circulating that Mysterio has signed a new deal, and following Seth Rollins's brutal attack on Dominik, the WWE legend is likely to return on August 23.

Keep in mind that this storyline is all about restoring honor to the Mysterio family and bringing him back would achieve that. Beyond this, it could be a great way to give Dominik a win in his first outing as a WWE Superstar, without forcing Rollins to take a clean loss.

#5 Seth Rollins attack on Dominick

Seth Rollins unleashed a vicious attack on Dominik Mysterio on RAW and one has to wonder if it was a way to set up Rey Mysterio's return at SummerSlam. Although WWE could still choose a different direction for this storyline, the pain inflicting on Dominik seems to point to his father getting involved.

Mysterio not returning at SummerSlam would almost be anticlimactic to the storyline at this point and make his character look like a coward. Furthermore, how exactly is WWE supposed to tell the conclusion of this story without involving Rey Mysterio?

WWE needs Mysterio in order to tell the rest of this story and Rollins's attack on Dominik is proof of that. At least that way, the Mysterio family will get revenge on Rollins, Dominik can come out looking like a hero, and Rollins won't have to take a clean loss.

#4 Rey Mysterio's new deal could mean a return at SummerSlam

Wouldn't it make sense for Rey Mysterio to return at SummerSlam after signing a new deal?

Rumors have suggested that Rey Mysterio has agreed to return to WWE after about a month of negotiations, which means there is reason to believe that he will be at the upcoming SummerSlam pay per view. Of course, nothing is definite as of yet and the company might have other plans. But wouldn't it make sense to bring him back at the upcoming pay per view?

Not only is that evident by his son Dominik needing his father to help tell this story of family redemption, but also by the fact that Seth Rollins cant afford to take a clean loss at SummerSlam. In fact, having Rollins lose clean would probably be a worst case scenario and leave him with little momentum going forward.

In the end, Mysterio returning at SummerSlam seems like the only way that WWE can finish this storyline on the right note. Either that, or having Rollins destroy Dominik with little fanfare, and then bringing back Mysterio when it almost isn't relevant anymore.

#3 WWE need Rey Mysterio to tell the complete story at SummerSlam

WWE needs Rey Mysterio to help tell this story at SummerSlam

While Seth Rollins versus Dominik Mysterio has all the makings of an instant classic at SummerSlam, it's pretty obvious that the Luchador's son is going to need some help in order to tell the full story. In fact, you almost can't tell the entire story of redemption with out Rey Mysterio coming back at this point.

Furthermore, Dominik seems to be struggling on the microphone, and although he does have a few decent one-liners here and there, he is just not capable of carrying this storyline on his own. Unfortunately for Rollins, he can't seem to get much out of Dominik either, thus why Mysterio is needed at SummerSlam.

If nothing else, everything that is not up to mark with Dominik's character and in-ring skills can be fixed by his father making a late save at SummerSlam. At least that way, Dominick gets a passing of the torch moment, Rollins doesn't have to carry the storyline, and WWE can reinsert Mysterio into weekly programming.

#2 WWE needs an out for Seth Rollins at SummerSlam

Seth Rollins can't afford to take a clean loss at SummerSlam

As much as the WWE Universe wants to see Dominik Mysterio defeat Seth Rollins clean at SummerSlam, the result would hurt one of the company's biggest heels. It might even severely diminish the value of Rollins's role on Monday Night RAW, which is something that WWE can't afford right now.

Again, fans wan't to see Dominik beat Seth Rollins, and while that is a possibility, WWE still needs to find a way to protect the former Universal Champion in defeat. Otherwise, Rollins will have to lose to someone who hasn't even been on the roster for that long and is years away from becoming an established figure in WWE.

Dominik is somewhat thriving in his role of upholding his family's honor, but he still lacks the personality and in-ring skills to justify a big win. That's why WWE needs to give Rollins an out at SummerSlam and an easy way to do that would be to bring Mysterio back to protect his son.

#1 A surprise return at SummerSlam is needed

Rey Mysterio returning at SummerSlam would be a nice surprise for fans

SummerSlam is one of the big four pay-per-views for a reason, and WWE would be foolish if they didn't have some kind surprises for the upcoming event. Between Ric Flair seemingly being written off television and WWE not bringing in Brock Lesnar for a return, the company needs all the star power they can get at SummerSlam.

WWE has backed themselves into a corner when it comes to SummerSlam, and while the company may try to remedy that with a rumoured new location, the vanity of that could fade away soon. WWE have also tried a variety of other things, but they haven't made too much progress in making the event a must-see pay-per-view.

WWE needs to give the fans a surprise that will give them something to cheer about, and nothing seems as big as Mysterio coming to the aid of his son. It might even be one of the biggest moments in SummerSlam history and really help cement Dominick as a top Superstar.
