Two memorable angles of the Ruthless Aggression Era

5 Ridiculous WWE storylines that actually worked

Over the course of the past several decades, WWE has churned out countless storylines and matches. Some have been etched forever in the annals of wrestling history as absolute classics, while a good number of them were pretty forgettable.

Storylines like the legendary Vince McMahon vs Stone Cold Steve Austin feud, Daniel Bryan's underdog story that led to a World title win at WWE WrestleMania 30, and the beef between Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage are all regarded as some of the very best storylines you'll ever find. In this slideshow though, we will be taking a look at storylines that seemed and looked ridiculous on occasions, but somehow managed to engage the WWE Universe enough for them to care about what was going on. Some of these angles seemed absurd at first, while others had elements of ridiculousness. One thing's common between all though: they all worked and are still remembered by the audience to this day.

Back in late 2003, Christian and Chris Jericho had a rather amusing wager on the road to WWE WrestleMania 20. The duo was pursuing Lita and Trish Stratus respectively, and the wager called that the money would be given to the guy who "got together" first with the girl he was pursuing.

The ridiculousness of this angle soon turned into must-watch content, as Jericho began having genuine feelings for Trish somewhere in the middle of the storyline. Christian didn't seem thrilled with the same, and the two kicked off a feud that led to a WrestleMania encounter. At The Show of Shows, Christian defeated Jericho after Trish 'accidentally' hit the latter. After the match, Trish showed her true colors by hitting Jericho again and revealing that she was with Christian all along. The angle continued further for a while, with Jericho defeating the duo in a Handicap match at WWE Backlash 2004. What started out as a tasteless angle that many deemed as offensive to women, turned into one of the best storylines of 2004.

We are way past the glory days of the WWE 24/7 title, but it certainly gave us some of the most hilarious moments in WWE history. Back in mid-2019, when the title was first introduced, fans weren't too thrilled with the design. It soon turned into one of the most entertaining aspects of WWE TV on a weekly basis, with R-Truth being at the center of all the chaos. Truth won the title on several occasions, and lost the same in amusing encounters with fellow WWE Superstars, in the most unusual of places.

Drake Maverick made it his ultimate goal to capture the title from Truth and finally succeeded in doing so. During Drake's wedding with Renee Michelle, Truth came out unannounced and pinned Maverick to win the title. Traditional wrestling fans and critics blasted the weekly 24/7 title segments, but the Youtube and Twitter numbers were telling a completely different story. For weeks on end, fans kept flocking in droves and WWE garnered millions of views on every 24/7 title clip featuring Truth and Maverick. Truth has won the title a whopping 38 times and is currently holding the belt.

#3 Several aspects of The Undertaker vs Randy Orton feud

The Undertaker's feud with Randy Orton kicked off on the road to WWE WrestleMania 21 in 2005, and fans couldn't have been more excited. The Deadman managed to put Orton down at The Grandest Stage Of Them All, but the rivalry was far from over. Orton made his way to SmackDown during the WWE Draft and resumed the feud by attacking The Undertaker. He defeated The Undertaker at SummerSlam with his father Bob Orton's help.

Here's where the ridiculousness began! The villainous duo defeated The Undertaker in a Casket match at WWE No Mercy and proceeded to light the casket on fire, 'murdering' The Undertaker. The Phenom soon made his way back at WWE Survivor Series 2005. On the road to Armageddon 2005, The Undertaker played a bunch of mind games on Orton, spooking him to no end. This included Josh Matthews being possessed by The Undertaker, Orton seeing The Deadman in washroom mirrors, and many more. The audience in the arenas and the ones sitting at home found these segments hilarious, while some were appalled with how ridiculous all of this was. In the end, The Undertaker defeated Orton inside Hell In A Cell to finish off the feud. Despite what happened on the way to Hell In A Cell, this rivalry is regarded as one of the all-time classics for the intensity shown by both wrestlers, and the incredible in-ring action that complemented it.

#2 The Firefly Fun House

After being away from WWE TV for months on end, Bray Wyatt finally appeared in a vignette that hinted that he was soon going to make a return. The vignettes began airing soon after WrestleMania 35 and showed Wyatt in a completely new avatar. The former Eater of the Worlds was now a children's show host and didn't display any sign that he was once the most ruthless entity on the WWE roster. As expected, a large portion of the WWE Universe criticized the angle. Many dubbed it as being cringe, while others simply weren't interested.

Soon, Wyatt began turning to the dark side, and it looked like something sinister was brewing in his mind. A few weeks later, Wyatt introduced us to his alter-ego, The Fiend. This intrigued fans to no end, with many praising WWE for the slow build, from the always-happy and smiling Wyatt to the horror that was The Fiend. He finally made his debut on an episode of RAW, attacking Finn Balor in the process. Balor lost to The Fiend in minutes, and the detractors realized how wrong they had been all this time.

#1 Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio fight over Dominik

Eddie and Rey

Back in 2005, Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio had a good thing going on as the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions. Eddie soon turned on Mysterio and a months-long feud kicked off between the two. Things suddenly took a turn that no one had ever imagined. Eddie brought Dominik in the mix, and stated that he was the real father of the kid. The road to WWE SummerSlam 2005 was a wild ride for the duo, as a Ladder match was sanctioned, with the winner being given the custody of Dominik.

As ridiculous as it all was, the angle somehow worked and Eddie became one of the most hated beings on the Blue brand. The crowd popped big for Mysterio when he defeated Eddie at WWE SummerSlam and hugged it out with Dominik in a heartfelt visual. Eddie went on to defeat Mysterio inside a Steel Cage, thus putting an end to the angle. Looking back on the storyline, it did its job of getting some serious heat on Eddie, even though the stipulation of the SummerSlam bout was as ridiculous as it could be. The excellent in-ring action helped as well.
