5 tag teams that broke up in the WWE Superstar Shakeup 2019

The 2019 WWE Superstar Shakeup is history and has ended up completely changing the landscape of WWE. A long string of WWE Superstars switched brands and several NXT Superstars made their way up to the main roster.

The Superstar Shakeup has a history of building up new alliances. On the other hand, it sometimes results in the breakup of a tag team. The WWE Universe might remember the time when The Miz and John Morrison broke up during the 2009 Superstar Shakeup, exactly a decade ago. The split turned Morrison into one of the biggest babyfaces on the blue brand. The Miz benefitted the most from the breakup and went on to become the WWE Champion on Monday nights.

At NXT TakeOver: War Games 2018, Kairi Sane faced off against Shayna Baszler in a "2 Out Of 3 Falls" match for the NXT Women's Title. Sane ended up losing the bout, thanks to interference by Shayna's allies, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir.

This resulted in Sane aligning with her best friend Io Shirai, forming The Sky Pirates. The duo went on to become a popular tag team down in NXT, but the association didn't last long, as tonight, Kairi Sane switched brands and became a part of SmackDown Live.

Paige had promised last week that she was going to bring in a tag team, which turned out to be Kairi Sane teaming up with former SmackDown Women's Champion, Asuka. Paige made another promise this week and stated that the duo is guaranteed to become the Women's Tag Team Champions in the near future. The IIconics currently hold the coveted belts.

Hopefully, Shirai gets to realign with her former tag team partner somewhere down the line, when she gets called up on the main roster.

#4 The Riott Squad

Squad is in the history books.

Back in November 2017, Liv Morgan, Ruby Riott, and Sarah Logan made their main roster debut on an episode of SmackDown Live, attacking Naomi and Becky Lynch.

The trio began getting addressed as "The Riott Squad" a week later. The dastardly villains were sent to Monday Night Raw in the 2018 Superstar Shakeup and had been actively wrestling on the red brand ever since.

The three women never rose beyond the ranks of a mid-card tag team and were recently fed to the WrestleMania headliner trio of Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, and Charlotte Flair. On tonight's Superstar Shakeup edition of SmackDown Live, it was announced that Liv Morgan would be joining the blue brand. This leaves Sarah Logan and Ruby Riott on Raw and marks the official breakup of The Riott Squad. It would be interesting to see where Morgan goes from here onwards, now that she won't have her longtime allies to back her up.

#3 SAnitY

Eric Young's move to Raw has led to the end of SAnitY.

The notorious faction originated in NXT in 2016 and originally consisted of Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe, Nikki Cross, and Sawyer Fulton.

Fulton was later replaced by Killian Dain and the group was called up to the main roster in last year's Superstar Shakeup. Nikki Cross remained in NXT for a while before making her way to the SmackDown roster in November 2018.

Last night, Eric Young was drafted to Monday Night Raw, thus marking an end to the group. During SAnitY's run in NXT, Young and Wolfe held the NXT Tag Team Championships on one occasion. Wolfe recently posted a tweet bidding goodbye to his SAnitY counterparts, stating that he was leaving WWE.

Killian Dain went on to post a heartfelt message after learning that the faction was broken up after Young's move to Raw. One of the most dominant factions in NXT history has come to an end, courtesy the Superstar Shakeup.

#2 Bobby Roode and Chad Gable

Hopefully, this leads to a push for Roode.

Amidst all these tag teams breaking up during the Superstar Shakeup, the split between Bobby Roode and Chad Gable isn't something that the fans would get emotional over.

Roode was one of the most promising NXT prospects till date and was reduced to being a mid-card regular on both SmackDown Live as well as Monday Night Raw. His throwaway tag team with Gable didn't do him any favors and WWE completely failed on capitalizing on Roode's "Glorious" gimmick.

Gable is another Superstar who has all the ingredients to move ahead on his own. Now that we have got Chad Gable on SmackDown and Bobby Roode on Raw, maybe WWE will wake up from its slumber and give a much-needed push to Roode for once. The former TNA Superstar oozes charisma and can hold his own inside the squared circle. This is one breakup that was a long time coming.

#1 The Boss 'n' Hug Connection

This past week has been a wild ride for the former Women's Tag Team Champions. Reportedly, Sasha Banks and Bayley threw a backstage fit after losing their tag team titles to The IIconics at WrestleMania 35. Banks went on to unfollow WWE on Twitter. She didn't stop at that and followed All Elite Wrestling.

Sasha hasn't been seen on Monday Night Raw ever since. The two best friends have been a mainstay on the red brand for a long while now. The duo became the first-ever Women's Tag Team Champions at the Elimination Chamber PPV, after a grueling contest inside the hellish structure.

With Sasha Banks nowhere to be seen and Bayley getting drafted on the blue show, it's safe to say that The Boss 'n' Hug Connection is history, at least for the time being.
