5 Things Paul Heyman does better than Vince McMahon

Let me begin this article by saying that this is not a knock on Vince McMahon at all, to any degree whatsoever. All of us sports entertainment fans wouldn't even be watching our favorite pastime had it not been for the billionaire who rules the industry.

At the same time, Vince McMahon must have appointed Paul Heyman as the Executive Director of RAW because he brings certain things to the table that others, Vince McMahon included, overlook. We shall touch upon 5 of these skills in this article, dearest reader.

Here are 5 things that Paul Heyman, in my opinion, can do significantly better than Vince McMahon.

#5 Recognizes the talent of overlooked individuals

Over the years, Vince McMahon has been criticized for favoring a certain type of Superstar over the other, especially when it comes to a certain look and build. This may no longer be the case with Superstars like Finn Balor and Kevin Owens in the roster, but you reach a ceiling even if you're not a McMahon prototype. Paul Heyman is someone who has recognized that Superstars come in all shapes and sizes and can utilize talent far better.

This is especially true for the WWE of today, where you have talented individuals like EC3 and Bobby Roode not get any screen time at all, because there is such an abundance of talent on both RAW and SmackDown Live. As you can see from the Tweet linked here, Heyman has been an advocate (no pun intended) for Maria Kanellis and must be responsible for giving her (and Mike) TV time.

There are many Superstars through history that Heyman has backed all the way to the top. Some of them did not fit the McMahon mold.

#4 Connects with the hardcore wrestling fan

If you are a fan of the Impact Wrestling product (which you should be, considering the quality of content that they're dishing out on a weekly basis), every time Tommy Dreamer or RVD steps out to compete, you have the crowd chant 'ECW'. This is amazing considering that the promotion shut down so many years ago. Paul Heyman created a gem that still lives on in the hearts and minds of fans.

At a time when AEW is trying to capture what is essentially the 'hardcore wrestling' fan base, Heyman is a great addition to the WWE think tank. This is because while he may not be a young man by any stretch of the imagination, he's far more in touch with what today's wrestling fan wants.

Vince McMahon likes to do things a certain way, which may seem outdated to some. Heyman has a goodwill among the hardcore crowd that will root for him to no end.

#3 Makes promos seem believable

There is a certain brand of humor that Vince McMahon is known to like, that may come across as dated to the whole world. It is the kind of humor that is very cheesy and corny, and not at par with what is hip and cool.

All you have to do is think back to the whole 'sufferin' succotash' segment between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, that had the whole world cringing in unison at just how out of touch it was. Paul Heyman, on the other hand, uses elements from real-life when it comes to writing promos for certain talents.

Remember the promo battle between Ronda Rousey and Nikki Bella when things got a little too personal? It was Paul Heyman who was working closely with Ronda Rousey that wrote the entire thing.

McMahon's promos appeal more to a family demographic while Heyman connects with the actual wrestling crowd.

#2 Has the goodwill of the locker room

Our very own Tom Colohue reported recently that Ronda Rousey, who's on a sabbatical from WWE is excited to return because Heyman is in charge. While there's no denying the fact that Vince McMahon is a genius, through and through, there is an element of sameness and safeness that has crept into the current WWE product. The locker room realizes that with Heyman at the helm, things could potentially be very different and exciting.

Even Jon Moxley, who has buried the WWE product ever since signing with AEW, was complimentary of Paul Heyman coming on board, into the WWE mix. In fact, the apprehension that he raised with the whole thing was whether or not Vince McMahon would allow Paul Heyman to let his ideas play out. It is very clear that the talent believes in Heyman far more, from a creative standpoint, at this moment.

#1 Lets stars be themselves

Sure, Vince McMahon has created some of the most enduring characters in wrestling history. But at the same time, a lot of his characters have been so cartoonish and over-the-top that many stars have felt that it wasn't really a reflection of the people that they truly are.

Paul Heyman has an innate ability to let superstars be themselves. It is a well-known fact that he took 'Stunning' Steve Austin, who had recently been fired from WCW and asked him to be himself and cut a promo airing out all of his grievances, which became the foundation for what became Stone Cold.

You often hear about stars like Jon Moxley being asked to cut promos saying stuff they don't believe in. Heyman understands that sometimes you just need to let a star be themselves, in order to succeed.

Look at what he did with Punk.
