Jon Moxley

5 things we learned from Jon Moxley's backstage promo in AEW

Last night, the wrestling world watched in utter shock, as Jon Moxley made his debut at the end of AEW's first show, Double Or Nothing. After Chris Jericho defeated Kenny Omega to earn a shot at the AEW World Title. Jon Moxley made his way to the ring through the crowd, and confronted Jericho.

He proceeded to attack Jericho, the referee, and Kenny Omega to end the show on an incredibly high note. Later, Tony Khan revealed Moxley's contract details with AEW, stating that he has signed a multi-year deal with the promotion.

Earlier tonight, AEW posted a video tweet that showed Jon Moxley cutting a scathing backstage promo after his appearance at Double Or Nothing. The promo lasts for almost a minute and a half, and features Moxley in all his glory. Moxley hinted at several things during the promo and we'll take a look at 5 things we learned from the same.

#5 Moxley was miserable in his final days in WWE

Jon Moxley needs to be praised by the wrestling community for being a total pro when it came to going through his final days in WWE. When he requested his release from the company, WWE publicized it heavily and we saw a string of "final Shield reunions", with the actual final one taking place at The Shield's Final Chapter.

Nevertheless, Moxley wasn't happy at all with how his star came to a standstill in WWE. He was already upset with how his heel turn had been handled. Further, he was put into a segment with Nia Jax, with Nia putting him down in the end. Nothing came out of it as we moved ahead. Moxley wasn't featured on the WrestleMania card either. When Moxley said that he is breathing fresh air for the first time in a long while, he was actually referring to the fact that he was in a sorry state during the final months of his WWE run.

#4 Moxley hasn't lost his touch on the mic one bit

When WWE realized that Moxley was hell-bent on leaving the company, they promoted the Shield reunion heavily. But one thing was missing here: Moxley had lost the drive, the passion, and the desire to give his 100%. Let's face it, he's definitely not someone fans would place beside the likes of Kurt Angle or Bret Hart.

Moxley is more of a brawler who has learned his craft in backyard wrestling and indie deathmatches. That doesn't mean that he can't wrestle good matches. His match against Kevin Owens at Royal Rumble a few years ago is still considered one of the best matches of that year. Still, what he lacks in this department though, he makes up for on the mic. Moxley showed in this promo that he still has 'IT'. This minute-long promo did more for his career than what he did in his final few months in WWE.

Remember Moxley's final days in WWE?

There were several moments when the live crowd chanted "please don't go" at him, as Seth Rollins stated how they had tried it already. The look on the face of Moxley during those moments told the whole story. He genuinely wanted to go somewhere he could actually be properly used, even though WWE paid him very well. It was never about the money for him.

His appearance at Double Or Nothing, plus this backstage promo made one thing very clear: Moxley seems to be happy to be where he's at! When he uttered those words, 'I'm alive', one could see the passion in his voice and the intensity he exuded. He didn't need to smile or grin at us to show how happy he is at the moment. This promo, and Moxley's demeanor, did it in a much better manner.

If last night's appearance didn't make it clear, perhaps this promo should do it!

Jon Moxley is set for a major push in AEW. He came out last night, and the crowd erupted in unison. There couldn't have been a better ending to the show than capping it off with a wide grin on Moxley's face, as he stood tall over Kenny Omega. Then there's this excellent backstage promo, which showed what Moxley can do if he is given free rein. It showed what he is capable of if he is let loose by the higher-ups of the promotion.

Moxley's promo is an indication that AEW has high hopes from him, and they trust him to become a major player in the coming days. In addition to having entertaining brawls, he is capable of holding his own in the talking department. Fans can expect him to turn into possibly the biggest Superstar on the AEW roster in the coming months.

Years from now, Moxley will possibly look back at this moment, and pat himself on the back for having the courage to leave a big paycheck and go somewhere he's genuinely happy.

#1 The war is on, even if AEW isn't admitting it

AEW vs WWE

Tony Khan has previously said that this isn't a war on WWE. On the other hand, we saw Cody Rhodes take a huge shot at Triple H during his Double Or Nothing entrance. This was in response to Triple H taking shots at AEW during DX's Hall of Fame induction. Many more jibes were taken during the show. Jericho had earlier stated that this is a war even if WWE and AEW don't want it to be.

Moxley stated in the promo that he is declaring war, on anyone who stands in his or AEW's way. This is as good of an indication as we can get that AEW is looking towards building a better product in the near future. Double Or Nothing proved that AEW is actually trying to create an alternative to WWE. It would be interesting to see how far the two companies go in the near future, to one-up each other.
