SmackDown delivered a rather fun episode this week

5 Things WWE got right on this week’s SmackDown before Super ShowDown (February 21, 2020)

The last episode of SmackDown before Suadi Arabia’s Super ShowDown event tried to build upon every storyline that will unfold at the show.

The New Day will defend their SmackDown Tag Team Championships at the event, and they got to face The Miz and Morrison with a couple of other tag teams in the ring.

#5 The Symphony of Destruction

The Symphony of Destruction returned in what seemed more like a themed Street Fight than anything else. Intercontinental Champion Braun Strowman teamed up with Elias to take on Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura.

The babyfaces took control of the match but the interferences by Sami Zayn helped the heel take back some control. The match was chaotic, to say the least, but had some good fun spots which were memorable.

A big suplex to Strowman by Cesaro and Nakamura on the cello was impressive and gave Strowman some cuts and bruises. Elias dodged a Kinshasa from Nakamura who was later powerbombed by Strowman onto a piano.

Elias delivered a top-rope elbow to Cesaro who was laid out on a table to take him out of the match.

Strowman pinned Nakamura to pick up another victory for his team. The match itself was nothing special, but some spots made it better than it was.

At this point, one wonders why SmackDown has stopped building the Intercontinental Championship storyline and who will be the next challenger for the title. But such matches can help other Superstars such as Elias and Cesaro get some build.

#4 The Superkick party

The Usos kicked off Friday night’s broadcast and promised a Superkick party. They invited The New Day to be their partners for the match. The Miz and John Morrison came out followed by Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, and the match was underway soon after.

The babyfaces rolled in the eight-man tag team match early but The Miz entered to take control. The heels worked on Kingston for as long as they could before he broke away and made a hot tag to Big E. The powerhouse exploded into the match and dropped every heel insight with some great moves.

While the heels got in once again, a Superkick from Jey Uso was enough to flatten out Roode and pick up the victory.

This was another good and fun eight-man tag team match which has become a usual feature in WWE. The showcase was great ahead of the SmackDown Tag Team Championship match at Super ShowDown. Roode taking the pin shows which team is regarded as the weak link in the SmackDown Tag Team division, while Uso getting the pin could signal towards the next challengers.

#3 Gulak’s possible push

Bryan once again got the better of the One Man Band

Daniel Bryan got into a backstage confrontation with former Cruiserweight Champion Drew Gulak who spoke about how Bryan did not seem to be up to the mark as of late. He was also confronted by Heath Slater.

This led to another match between Slater and Bryan this week after Bryan tore through the One Man Band a couple of weeks ago.

With Gulak joining Michael Cole and Corey Graves on commentary, we saw Bryan tear through Slater once again, but Slater showed some fight in this match. He fought out of The LeBell Lock and tried to punish Bryan’s knee.

However, a missed top rope maneuver allowed Brayn to regain control and hit the running knee soon after to pick up the victory.

This was a better match for both Bryan and Slater and The Planet’s Champion did not seem like a heel in this one.

Gulak’s introduction into this storyline is the most interesting part as it could either lead to him getting a major push and competing with Bryan soon or become some sort of a manager.

From what we know about Bryan, he is never shy of putting some new rising talent over without losing any value of his own. We hope the Bryan and Gulak segments continue.

#2 Goldberg plants The Fiend

Goldberg got the better of The Fiend

We asked for it, and WWE delivered!

The legendary Goldberg returned to SmackDown this week to main-event the show. He drew an enormous reaction, as expected, and went on to talk about his match before The Firefly Fun House interrupted.

Bray Wyatt continued his usual show before Golberg cut him off and claimed that he wasn’t there for silly talk and wanted to take the Universal Championship instead.

Wyatt told the Goldberg that he did not know him and that he won’t be taking anything away from The Fiend. He introduced all the members of the Firefly Funhouse to Goldberg before saying that there was one more person left for him to meet.

The lights went out and The Fiend stood behind Goldberg once they came back on again. Before The Fiend could do anything, Goldberg planted him with a Spear and left him on the mat. The Fiend got back up, looked at his opponent for Super ShowDown, and the lights went out again for him to disappear.

This was a great segment that built towards the massive slash for Thursday in the simplest way. We know that nothing can scare Goldberg, and The Fiend’s attempt proved to do nothing to the former Universal Champion.

How will the two perform once the opening bell rings? We’ll need to wait to find out.

#1 The heart was meant to be broken

Last week, not only did Mandy Rose break Otis’ fragile heart, but also the hearts of millions of fans watching the show.

This week, as the fans looked for answers from The God’s Greatest Creation, Tucker took matters in his own hands.

After SmackDown showed a recap of the romance between Otis and Rose, coupled with the heartbreaking footage from last week’s show, Tucker approached Rose and her friend Sonya Deville.

Tucker defended his partner, claiming he’s the nicest man he knows and asked Rose why she’d texted Otis that she was running late even though she had arrived at the restaurant and dining with Dolph Ziggler.

Rose seemed clueless about the text, which followed with Deville defending her friend and claiming that The Showoff was more of Rose’s type. The plot now opens up as it seems like Rose did not send the text and it was probably Deville who did so to get Rose to hook up with Ziggler.

This could lead to one woman turning on the other soon marking the beginning of their rivalry. These segments are also a great way of keeping both tag teams on screen without having them compete much as both are future contenders for the two Tag Team Championships.
