WWE surprised the entire WWE Universe with some results on SmackDown

5 Things WWE SmackDown got right this week (June 5, 2020)

While NXT is busy building towards NXT TakeOver: In Your House, RAW and SmackDown have their complete focus on the WWE Backlash pay-per-view. This week allowed the company to build some final storylines and feuds before they can wrap them up on the go-home episode of the Blue brand next week.

The biggest match scheduled for the show main-evented the night as Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross defended their WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships against Sasha Banks and SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley.

The SmackDown creatives once again went back to their old ways to build the rivalry between Universal Champion Braun Strowman and his opponents for Backlash The Miz and John Morrison. However, it was the face to face talk between Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles that was the most entertaining part of the night and gave fans an interesting match and a huge surprise.

Otis and Mandy Rose were seen playing with King Corbin’s crown backstage on SmackDown which led to a match between the two men in the ring.

Otis took control of the match early on, but once the two men took the fight to the floor, Corbin made the comeback. He continued to attack Otis and delivered a big spine buster followed by a pin attempt.

Rose tried her best to cheer her boyfriend from ringside as Otis began to make a comeback in the match. Once The Dozer got back in the match, he decided to impress everyone with a few big suplexes on Corbin.

Once Corbin thought that there was no way out of a loss, he decided to take his crown and leave. Otis went after him, but Corbin hit him with a steel chair which led to a disqualification victory for The Dozer.

Mr. Money in the Bank wasn’t ready to go down without a fight and took down Corbin before hitting The Caterpillar and standing tall with The Golden Goddess to end the segment.

Otis is SmackDown’s new shining star and the company has been giving him big moments and matches against men who have previously received a lot of push.

While he hasn’t been able to do the same work as several Money in the Bank winners before him, we can hope that he will learn a few things in the coming weeks and give the fans a few more entertaining segments with the briefcase in the coming weeks.

#4 Sonya Deville gets the spotlight again

Sonya Deville and Lacey Evans were once again booked to compete on this week’s SmackDown, and Deville did not waste any time to gain an advantage as she attacked Evans while she was making her entrance.

While Evans was beaten down before the match could begin, she did a great job of going after Deville right from the opening bell. Deville got back in the match thanks to her experience and looked to score another victory over The Sassy Southern Belle this week.

She once again went after Evans outside the ring and stood on her neck on the stairs to make a statement. Deville was in the driving seat but Mandy Rose appeared on the big screen to distract her former best friend long enough for Evans to hit The Women’s Right and pick up the win.

While we thought the story between Rose and Deville was over on SmackDown, this match allowed the creatives to once again further the feud without getting the two women physically involved.

This will be a good way to keep both the Superstars in the spotlight, and fans can hope that Deville will finally win the feud so she can progress to her next big challenge.

#3 Shorty G’s new alliance

Shorty G was attacked backstage on SmackDown this week by Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura before SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day came to his aide.

This led to a match between the teams of Shorty G and The New Day, and Cesaro, Nakamura, and Mojo Rawley.

It was good to see Rawley back in the ring for a big match as he started the match for the heel team. The heels tried their best to take out the powerhouse of the babyface team, but Big E was too good to be controlled.

He and Kingston pulled off some wonderful moves before Cesaro helped Rawley dodge a Trouble in Paradise from Kingston. Kingston then injured his knee by diving outside the ring, and Rawley found an opening to keep the former WWE Champion down.

After some more shenanigans from the heels, Kingston and Big E put away Rawley while Gable kept Nakamura and Cesaro out of the ring. This was an entertaining match that gave Shorty G and Rawley some extended time in the ring.

With New Day picking up the win by putting away Rawley, one can safely assume that the SmackDown creatives will look to bring Cesaro and Nakamura in the SmackDown Tag Team Championship picture sooner rather than later.

#2 Drew Gulak’s upset victory

Intercontinental Championship contenders AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan met in the ring for a face to face talk on SmackDown this week, with Renee Young moderating the segment. She asked the usual questions before Styles revealed that he believed the only reason Bryan is in Sheamus’ place for the finals is due to the interference by Jeff Hardy on last week's SmackDown.

He called Bryan noble, yet stupid, for what he did last week as he opted to fight for a spot in the finals rather than just accepting it as Styles did.

Bryan spoke about how he saw the Intercontinental Championship as a big title and how he would defend it every week on SmackDown if he managed to win it. After a few more hot words, Styles surprised everyone by giving Bryan’s mentor Drew Gulak a match against himself.

The former Cruiserweight Champion came out to the ring and went after The Phenomenal One almost immediately. Gulak showed great skill in the fight against the former WWE Champion and kept him down with technical maneuvers.

Styles set up to The Styles Clash, but Gulak managed to counter and cover him to pick up a huge victory just days before Styles’ big Intercontinental Championship Tournament finals match.

Is this the push Drew Gulak needed on SmackDown?

While we have seen Gulak lose to most of Bryan’s opponents, it was great to see him pick up a victory over the biggest fish on SmackDown. While this could indicate that Styles will come back stronger against Bryan and possibly win the title, Gulak was the man who needed the right push and got it against the perfect heel.

#1 The surprising WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match

The main event of this week’s SmackDown saw Sasha Banks and SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley going after Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.

Cross was on the front foot from the opening bell and wasn’t afraid to take down Bayley as soon as the bell rang. Frequent tags kept the action fresh, as all four women got equal time to show their skills and keep their team in the match.

Once Bliss got the advantage, The Legit Boss distracted her, allowing The Role Model to cut her off and take back the control of the match. Bliss managed to fight out of an attempted Bayley to Belly suplex, and miscommunication began to drive a fork in The Boss N’ Hug Connection’s journey.

Where is SmackDown going with this story?

Banks managed to pin Cross to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships to the surprise of the entire WWE Universe. Bliss and Cross had been doing well as Champions, and it felt like this match was booked to create even more differences between Banks and Bayley.

However, the SmackDown creatives have other plans, and it seems like their reign together as Champions will be the major point in their breakup. We could see Bliss and Cross win back the titles early, leading to the breakup that everyone has been looking forward to.
