WWE Money in the Bank 2019: 7 things that must happen at the PPV

Money in the Bank is this Sunday, and as always, it's time to go over the card to see what should happen and what shouldn't. WWE has been in the dumps lately and badly needs a kick in the rear, particularly with All Elite Wrestling now securing a blockbuster TV deal on a major network, TNT. Competition is ramping up, and AEW is already the talk of the town.

WWE can start to fix some of the mistakes it's made this year by booking the Money in the Bank pay per view well. Daniel Bryan and Rowan are certain to retain over the Usos, Roman Reigns will crush Elias, and Tony Nese is certain to retain his Cruiserweight title, but some of the other matches are up in the air.

Here's how WWE can make the most of this show.

#1. Samoa Joe remains United States Champion

Why this match is happening in the first place, after Samoa Joe decimated Mysterio in seconds at WrestleMania, is beyond me, but here we are. Joe has been pinned a few times on Raw since the show at MetLife, so he's relatively safe. Nevertheless, you never know, as Joe's booking has never been consistent. Let's hope it is this time.

There's a lot of gas left in the tank to Samoa Joe's reign, and despite his losses on TV, he carries such credibility that he has helped the United States Championship gain the most relevancy it's had in two years, when SmackDown's top superstars feuded over it while Jinder Mahal was carrying on with his infamous WWE title reign.

Not the least of our thoughts is the teased feud with Braun Strowman, even though it seems like a long time ago now. We still want to see it.

There's more to gain from keeping the title on Samoa Joe than there is in putting it on Mysterio, "grand slam" be damned.

#2. The Miz beats Shane McMahon

I know it's unlikely because he's feuding with Roman Reigns also and is the next logical opponent, but The Miz really does need to beat Shane McMahon at Money in the Bank. While Miz has Teflon qualities against WWE's bad booking and can bounce back after a loss, there's something even more important that needs to happen.

Shane McMahon needs to be removed from television. He is without question the most noxious presence on the shows right now and his hogging the spotlight has prevented the content from evolving post-WrestleMania. His appearances on both shows have been time wasting escapades that have extended his feud with The Miz unnecessarily and overexposed Roman Reigns. Shane McMahon has had one of the worst runs of anyone this year so far.

For the sake of the product, The Miz needs to win here, but I'm not holding my breath.

#3. Seth Rollins retains the Universal Championship

It's unlikely that Seth Rollins loses on Sunday, but AJ Styles is also a company favourite, so the possibility is always open. AJ Styles still feels like he's coming off a lengthy title reign, even six months later. He doesn't need another one so soon. AJ Styles will be fine without a title around his waist.

There's still a lot of mileage left in Rollins' reign, though hopefully his next opponent won't be Baron Corbin, of all people.

#4. Kofi Kingston retains the WWE Championship

Kofi Kingston has been one of WWE's most valuable players this year and it's way too soon to take the WWE Championship from him. He's still the most over male superstar in the company.

Kevin Owens, on the other hand, has consistently flopped when he's been the focus of a show for extended periods. His Universal Championship reign depended entirely on the presence of Chris Jericho and his feud with Shane McMahon was a dud.

A Kevin Owens title reign would have a predictable course. He'd simply keep the belt warm for Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.

Kofi Kingston, on the other hand, has a much more intriguing course as champion. He should hold on to it for a while longer, even though I've been predicting he won't.

#5. Sami Zayn wins the briefcase

Truthfully, this is more of a process of elimination thing than anything else. The lineup in the men's Money in the Bank match should give us a good show, but none of them, aside from Zayn, have any sort of heat that would make a future world title run appropriate at this time. Sami Zayn has done some of the best work he's ever done since coming back to Raw after WrestleMania.

A feud between this version of Sami Zayn and Seth Rollins would bring more heat to Raw than it's seen in a while simply by default, so that's what the company needs to do for the sake of a show that's currently ice cold.

Zayn should stay away from Owens. Their careers have been too intertwined and it's rarely produced good results. Hopefully this week's "wild card" nonsense was simply a one-off.

#6. Becky retains both titles...

The reign of "Becky 2 Belts" has gotten off to an atrocious start, to be honest. After winning the titles in fluke fashion following a horrendous build to WrestleMania, she doesn't have quite the heat that she used to, and she's been forced to have yet another match with Charlotte Flair for one title and carry the green Lacey Evans for the other.

Becky has a rough night ahead of her, but she needs to retain over both of these women.

Nobody wants to see yet another Charlotte Flair title reign right now, and probably not for the next year or more. Meanwhile, it's far too soon for Lacey Evans to win a championship. Putting the red title on her would simply be setting her and the Raw women's division up for failure.

Becky shouldn't be losing to either of these lackluster opponents. But her night shouldn't end just yet.

#7 ...But Bayley cashes in!

The lineup for the women's Money in the Bank ladder match is as equally lacking as the men's and the match won't be nearly as good. Of the competitors, only one has any sort of angle that would justify a future world title reign right now, and that's Bayley.

Though she's been barely seen on SmackDown for the past few weeks, her presence nevertheless looms. Simply by using the process of Elimination, she's best poised to win the briefcase, and she should cash in on that very night.

Becky Lynch needs to drop one of those titles, period. It was a bad idea to even get the SmackDown women's title involved at WrestleMania. A month after the showcase of the immortals, the women's division has gone from troubled to ice cold. Becky Lynch has become overexposed. Raw needs her full-time services much more.

The division badly needs a shot in the arm. Seeing the shock of Bayley not only winning the title, but using dirty tactics to do so, would be the fresh start that it needs.
