8 things WWE subtly told us at Super ShowDown: Major change in WrestleMania 36 plans, Big error made in Undertaker's return?

WWE Super ShowDown 2020 is in the books and apart from being a long event, it took a few unexpected turns. For the first three Saudi Arabia shows, it seemed like title changes weren't required and that they were, in fact, just glorified house shows.

However, since Crown Jewel 2019, WWE established that the two Saudi Arabia shows that take place annually are full-fledged PPVs where anything can happen. That's certainly the card that they pulled at Super ShowDown 2020, but unfortunately, it wasn't in a good way.

However, there were a few Superstars that came out looking a lot better, but as a whole, the show simply lacked build, pace, and a hot crowd. Without any further ado, let's look at the things WWE subtly told us at Super ShowDown 2020:

#8. The main event fallout

Ad
Why?
Ad

For months now, we've been writing about how things are changing in WWE and how part-timers are slowly becoming a thing of the past, with WWE fully focused on the current generation of full-time talent.

Ad

It seems like all of that has gone down the drain. In the main event, Goldberg squashed 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt to win the Universal Championship for the second time. He joins Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins as the only multi-time Universal Champions and as Wyatt was gaining some major momentum for an incredible run, history repeated itself.

It seems like the more things change, the more they stay the same, and this confirms the rumors of there being a change in plans at WrestleMania 36, with Goldberg now expected to defend the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns while 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt is rumored to take on John Cena.

Goldberg's win was a huge disappointment and a short-sighted decision. He'll now have a brief one-month run on SmackDown.

#7. The Undertaker scouts his WrestleMania 36 opponent

It happened
Ad

The rumors of AJ Styles facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania 36 have now been confirmed as true. In the gauntlet match for the Tuwaiq Trophy, AJ Styles was set to go last against the returning Rey Mysterio, but Gallows and Anderson did his dirty work backstage and assaulted the legend, leading AJ Styles to demand victory by forfeit.

Just as the referee was counting down, the clip showed Gallows & Anderson falling to the floor and the black boots and long overcoat indicated who was coming. The Undertaker, taking his own sweet time as usual to enter, finally reached and chokeslammed AJ Styles to beat him and win the Tuwaiq Trophy.

We feel WWE made a big error using this to start the rivalry since the "Tuwaiq Trophy" which was deemed as "prestigious" turned out to be an unnecessary prop that didn't even matter at the end.

We don't expect The Undertaker to appear this coming RAW. He's advertised for the 9th March edition, which is just a night after Elimination Chamber. They could easily have built it from then.

#6. R-Truth gets a push of his own on the night

R-Truth had quite the showing
Ad

R-Truth has always been comedy gold and as a result, a valuable part of WWE TV. He's entertained fans for years now with his great comedic timing and at WWE Super ShowDown 2020, he was rewarded with one of his best in-ring performances in years.

He was squashed by Bobby Lashley not too long ago on RAW, but this time, he managed to get the pin on Lashley before suffering a beatdown. He then took on the returning United States Champion Andrade and ended up beating him in a very odd and flat finish.

After that was Erick Rowan and to protect both men, Rowan was DQ'd for using a steel chair. He would proceed to attack Truth as well. He faced AJ Styles, who took his own time and tapped a beaten-down Truth with relative ease.

While this isn't a big sign of a push, it's probably to help promote his WWE 24 Documentary episode that released immediately after the PPV. Either way, it feels like Truth was given a great outing.

#5. End of Roman Reigns-King Corbin

The end.
Ad

We thought that the Falls Count Anywhere match between Roman Reigns and King Corbin would have marked the end of their feud. The stipulation suggested it and the stage was big enough to pay off the feud.

Instead, WWE dragged it on unnecessarily for another month and they finally decided to end the 4-month long rivalry inside the steel cage. It was one of the better matches of the night and perhaps one of the best in their prolonged series of matches.

When Michael Cole acknowledged on commentary that it's the end of the rivalry, that was WWE directly telling us that it's over for good. Reigns will be expected to compete in the Elimination Chamber match to determine Goldberg's Universal Championship challenger at WrestleMania 36.

We fully expect him to win that, but the big question is whether history will repeat itself at WrestleMania and Roman Reigns gets booed again. Reigns was last booed in the Royal Rumble but used to get heat so Drew McIntyre could get the big pop for winning.

#4. A multi-man tag team match at WrestleMania?

And New!
Ad

John Morrison returned to WWE and won the Tag Team Championship with The Miz after 11 years. That's a long time and it's good to see that he's gotten that success as quickly as he did.

As we know, WrestleMania is the time when WWE wants to get almost everybody on the card, and we don't disagree with the sentiment. As a result, the best way to defend Tag Team titles these days is to have a multi-man match and at WrestleMania 36, we fully expect that Miz and Morrison will defend the titles against The Usos and The New Day.

Since there's no KofiMania 2 this year, the former WWE Champion will likely remain in the Tag Team title picture. A 3-way is perhaps the best to go, though Heavy Machinery could be a possible addition too along with Robert Roode & Dolph Ziggler.

However, all that depends on how the Otis-Mandy Rose-Dolph Ziggler story ends up playing out. There have been some rumblings that Otis could face Ziggler at WrestleMania 36.

#3. Bayley and Seth Rollins & Buddy Murphy secure their tickets to WrestleMania 36

The RAW Tag Team Champions
Ad

While two titles changed hands on the night, two didn't - the RAW Tag Team Championship and the SmackDown Women's Championship. Seth Rollins & Murphy took on The Street Profits and that was one of the best matches of the night, with Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins proving to be phenomenal in the ring with the Champions.

They certainly held their own and looked good in defeat. It was a dusty finish that allowed Murphy to get the pin and win for his team and they're now set to walk into WrestleMania 36 as Tag Team Champions.

Expect Kevin Owens to be involved in some capacity against Rollins & Murphy.

Bayley, on the other hand, defeated Naomi in a somewhat underwhelming match in the co-main event. The crowd was hot for Naomi, but she was never going to win the SmackDown Women's Championship. We fully expect Sasha Banks to return and claim that WrestleMania 36 slot against Bayley.

#2. The Fiend's post-match incident

What happened in the main event?
Ad

We decided to bring up a separate point to dive into the fiasco that was Goldberg defeating 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt to become Universal Champion. Wyatt got little to no offense in, only briefly having the mandible claw inside Goldberg's mouth.

Apart from that, he ate a few spears and one awfully-executed Jackhammer to lose the Universal Championship. Right as Goldberg was perched on the second turnbuckle and celebrating with the crowd, The Fiend stood up and looked as though nothing had happened. Goldberg sensed that he was up and turned around.

Just as they were set for another confrontation, the lights went out and The Fiend was gone. This was likely WWE's way of "protecting" The Fiend or making him look good. We would like to think that Bray Wyatt's planned to lose to Goldberg, but we don't see them picking up that rivalry again.

However, this more than likely means that Cena will be the man who The Fiend targets. He makes storyline sense as a WrestleMania 36 opponent for The Fiend.

#1. Ricochet used as a prop for the Drew McIntyre-Brock Lesnar feud

Ricochet was one of the big 'losers' of the night
Ad

We feel for Ricochet. The build has been about how he is being underestimated and how people think he has no chance against Brock Lesnar. In the promo, Ricochet spoke about how he believes he's going to prove people wrong and all of that resulted in a 1.5-minute squash match.

Ricochet may be one of the fastest-rising stars on Monday Night RAW, but he's nowhere near the level of Lesnar and Super ShowDown was a harsh reminder of that. Ultimately, Ricochet was used to make Lesnar look like an even bigger threat so Drew McIntyre's (expected) win against him at WrestleMania 36 will be that much bigger.

However, we feel it was injustice to Ricochet to get nothing in, especially since Lesnar has proved to work much better with "smaller" opponents rather than bigger ones. Either way, it's onto WrestleMania 36 for him.
