The Royal Rumble was a pretty good show all around

Best and worst of Royal Rumble 2020- Big push for underrated stars, Major mistake with Charlotte Flair?

I honestly enjoyed every minute of the Royal Rumble, not counting the Kickoff show. The Kickoff show was a waste of everyone's time and honestly, I would have been okay not seeing what transpired.

But everything on the main show was well worth my time and way more worth than mere the $9.99 I paid to watch it. Let me know if you enjoyed the Royal Rumble as much as I did and if so, please sound off in the comments below.

A lot of us tend to watch a show with a sense of prejudice, hoping that a certain person wins and another one doesn't. In my review, I shall not be reviewing the show from that perspective and instead, will talk about whether I was entertained or not!

You cannot and should not watch professional wrestling as a real sport, backing one player over another one, in my opinion.

#1 Best: Drew McIntyre shines, new stars created

Roman Reigns was the favorite for the Royal Rumble, going into the match, and I was pretty scared thinking of how the WWE Universe may react if Roman Reigns did indeed win the contest. Even though he's a babyface at the moment and while the crowd doesn't hate him as much as they used to, they don't cheer for him to the same degree as they do for say, someone like Becky Lynch.

But thankfully, it was Drew McIntyre who not only won the Royal Rumble match but also eliminated Brock Lesnar, who had a pretty dominant showing in the contest. I also loved how strongly Shayna Baszler and Bianca Belair were booked.

This was pretty much the perfect Royal Rumble, where a lot of new stars were created by the geniuses in the WWE creative team.

#1 Worst: Charlotte Flair wins the women's Royal Rumble match

Charlotte Flair recently caught up with Sportskeeda's own Gary Cassidy and buried all her critics who believe that she's booked far too strongly. I mean if Becky Lynch is the Stone Cold Steve Austin of this generation ('The Man' of the people), Charlotte Flair is probably The Rock of today (fits the WWE corporate mold to the letter)

But honestly, I thought that there was a missed opportunity with regard to creating a new star in Shayna Baszler with Charlotte Flair winning the Royal Rumble. She is certainly one of the all-time greats, but we're reaching a point where it's a 2-woman division on RAW, and WWE needs more players to step up and be worthy opponents for Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair.

But what is done is done and one hopes that Charlotte Flair will not face Becky Lynch at WrestleMania, very honestly. We have seen that match far too many times already and it would not excite the casual fan, in my personal opinion.

#2 Best: A very welcome return

Much was made of the fact that Edge could return at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, but Triple H's own comments about Edge's kids cast a shadow over the monumental return. So, when Alter Bridge played over the speakers and the arena exploded with glee, it was a sight to see. Edge hasn't lost a step in the ring and while he did not win the match, he had a pretty fantastic showing all throughout the contest.

Randy Orton had made a passing comment about Edge during a segment on RAW where he had teased his retirement. I loved the sub-story that was told in the ring, first with the two men teasing an alliance and then with Randy Orton betraying Edge during the course of the contest. The two men are definitely going to clash at WrestleMania and what a titanic battle that is guaranteed to be!

Or maybe Edge has returned to compete in Saudi Arabia in what should be a mouth-watering clash with the Apex Predator of WWE, Orton.

#2 Worst: An unwelcome return

I laugh at the worst of jokes (which explains how I've been a WWE fan for so very long) but the whole deal with Santina wasn't funny at all, I thought. I can only assume that Sasha Banks is out of commission and WWE needed someone to take her place. I'm guessing that they did not want to bring another legend back and hence, settled for Santina.

The self-elimination spot wasn't funny at all, and honestly, a lot of people have just forgotten about Santina. R-Truth entering the women's Royal Rumble by mistake would have been much funnier if they really wanted a man in the women's match. The crowd did not react to the Santina spot live, and they've been pretty much butchering the whole thing on social media (not that the WWE universe online likes most things, but still!)

I would have chosen to bring in someone from NXT instead and have her get eliminated, but just have her name out there, as an introduction to the world.

#3 Best: The amazing Mandy/Otis spot

There were quite a few spots at the Royal Rumble that I thought were quite awesome. I know that Kofi Kingston did not get to do his spot this year, but I was glad to see that Naomi got a fantastic spot in and I do believe that she may have taken over the 'spot' (no pun intended) from Kingston.

But the best thing on the whole show has to be what happened with Mandy Rose and Otis, which came completely out of the blue to most fans. Mandy Rose was about to be eliminated but then, we saw that she had landed on Otis, who's made his intentions towards Rose quite clear in the past few weeks on SmackDown on FOX.

I also loved the fact that Otis hung around ringside and the announcers just kept ripping on him, putting him over in the process. Even though he wasn't really the star of the Royal Rumble as a wrestler, his mere presence will not be forgotten.

Otis and Mandy are doing everything right in WWE!

#4 Best: No red light at all!

One of the biggest issues with The Fiend's matches thus far has been the red light, which set his character apart but was also a huge deterrent to people enjoying his clashes. I am glad to report that the strap match between The Fiend and Daniel Bryan for the WWE Universal Championship did not feature the red light and it was a welcome development, in my opinion.

I get the fact that the red light was used to create an ominous atmosphere but it also impaired visibility to a great degree and honestly, ruined the experience for many a fan. Under the normal lights, Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan stepped up their game and actually put on the best match both men have had, in quite some time.

And so, there you have it. This was my review of the Royal Rumble and you, the constant reader may be aware that usually my reviews end with an extra 'worst' but there were far more 'bests' than 'worsts' this time around!

And as always, I bid farewell with an image of The Goddess, Alexa Bliss.
