Standing out in a sea of awful

The biggest winners and losers from last night's SmackDown (June 4)

SmackDown is beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel. What was usually a good show last year has joined Monday Night Raw as being among the worst on television. The "Wild Card" rule has muddied the waters of both shows and rendered WWE's ability to tell a story, which was already questionable beforehand, totally impotent.

Instead, everything in the post-Wild Card world is done for ad-hoc purposes, even more than previously. It took its toll on SmackDown last night, as "Wild Card" nonsense and the desperate bid for ratings with old-timers took up most of SmackDown.

Things are circling the drain fast. Did anyone escape?

Losers: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

Stuff like this is why so many people are considered "buried" after merely one loss. Having failed to capture the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank, Kevin Owens is now losing in random tag team matches with Sami Zayn, who is supposedly on Raw, to build heat for an obvious filler match between Kofi Kingston and Dolph Ziggler.

Ziggler's promo a couple of weeks ago was good, but the one he cut last night was decidedly not. Presumably, he'll be gone again after this Friday. And what did Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn gain out of all this? Nothing but a defeat from the New Day in a random tag team match.

This is why everybody feels the same, nobody feels like a star, and ultimately, why ratings and interest in the WWE product is at an all time low.

After these past two nights, it seems clear to me that the competition is going to be between NXT and AEW. The main roster product has never felt more missable or irrelevant. Witness the sad, fast descent of the SmackDown brand.

Loser: The SmackDown Women's Division

While the show opener was tenuous, this was downright nonsensical. Why is Alexa Bliss, a Raw superstar, getting a SmackDown women's title shot? Why would WWE even have the inkling of revisiting the worst feud of 2017 between her and Bayley? Why is Alexa Bliss getting a spotlight on SmackDown when actual blue brand superstars like Asuka, Kairi Sane, and Ember Moon, all of whom could have a great match with Bayley, are sitting in catering?

It makes zero sense. Zero. It's another damning indictment of the "Wild Card" rule showing that nothing and no one is safe anymore.

Winner: R-Truth

R-Truth continues to be the saving grace of whatever show he's on. That's as much an indictment of the "creative" process as anything else, but R-Truth has always been entertaining, and he's making this 24/7 title a hit. It finally got involved in an actual match last night, and there were a lot of funny spots.

R-Truth and Elias would even battle underneath the ring.

It's fun variety. Fun variety is what this company desperately needs.

Loser: Aleister Black

It's nice that Aleister Black is still getting some airtime (he could be much worse off, like Buddy Murphy), but as he himself seems to indicate, this is getting tiresome. He needs to enter the ring and soon.

Perhaps after WWE's latest Saudi show is over with, he'll do that, but these promos are now hurting rather than helping him. He needs to get in the ring soon. It's amazing that WWE has taken one of my favorite NXT superstars and made me not care about the segments he's in. I know I'm not alone.

Loser: Roman Reigns

Shane McMahon is without question the worst thing on WWE television now, and that's saying a lot. These overlong, repetitive segments are doing nothing for Roman Reigns, who's been in this situation too many times to count.

The sooner he puts Shane on the shelf, the better. The goodwill toward Roman Reigns is still there, but this rivalry is seriously damaging it.

Loser: Lars Sullivan

Lars Sullivan is an unexciting, generic monster. There, I said it. Nobody cared about this interview, and it was a complete waste of the viewers' time. Everyone knows where this is going. He'll squash the Lucha House Party on Friday, squash a few more people over the coming months, and then lose to somebody like Roman Reigns. It's the same with all monster builds.

While Braun Strowman has the charisma to escape these confines to a degree, Lars Sullivan doesn't. This is painful to watch.

Loser: Andrade

Since we know that Andrade will be taking on Finn Balor as the Demon on Friday (are we sure that's allowed in Saudi Arabia?), we know he's losing. So to build that match, which, to be fair, should be very good if it goes on long enough, we got a generic brawl segment.

Apollo Crews was also involved, but he was thrown away like he didn't matter at all. And then we wonder why we hear all those rumors of people wanting to leave WWE.

What makes Sting special? His first AEW opponent opens up RIGHT HERE.
