The rumoured tag team match for the blue brand's title.

Top 5 Tag Team Title Matches in Wrestlemania History

As of today, we are only 24 days away from the biggest event in professional wrestling - Wrestlemania. Not only is WWE giving it's fans their dream match in Styles vs. Nakamura for the WWE Championship, the show will also feature the professional wrestling debut of former UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey. Matches for the Universal Title, Smackdown's Women Title and IC Title have also generated buzz over the past week.

Another interesting development was the announcement of the match for the Raw Tag Team Titles between The Bar and, well, Braun Strowman. On the blue brand, The Usos are on course to their first main card clash as they are rumoured to face The New Day and The Bludgeon Brothers. The tag title bouts do not get enough buzz during the Wrestlemania season and are often relegated to the pre-show, but if history is any evidence, these matches always steal the show if given ample time.

The 33-year history of Wrestlemania has seen various impeccable Tag Title Matches and as a tribute to those great tag teams, we take a look at five best tag title matches in Wrestlemania history.

#5. New Age Outlaws(Jesse James and Billy Gunn)(c) vs Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie (Dumpster Match at WrestleMania XIV)

This match was as hardcore as the wrestlers involved.

Officially regarded as the beginning of the Attitude Era, WrestleMania XIV is remembered only for the last two matches on the card. On one hand, the warring Brothers of Destruction were finally writing the first in-ring chapter in their long, dark saga and on the other side, Steve Austin was finally making his long-due ascent to the top of the WWE ladder. The dumpster match for the tag titles, however, is not that fondly remembered by the fans even though it was a perfect example of WWE's tag matches during that era.

A feud that began with The New Age Outlaws dumping Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie into a dumpster and then throwing Cactus Jack off the stage had to end in a memorable fashion at the Grandest stage of them all.

Famous for their hardcore style, Jack and Charlie were exceptionally complimented by The Outlaws, who constantly bashed the two brawlers with weapons. Jack and Gunn were knocked off a ladder into the dumpster and Charlie took a powerbomb into the dumpster. As the action moved backstage, Charlie used a fork-lift to dump The Outlaws into a dumpster backstage as Jack and Charlie finally captured the Tag Titles.

#4. Gallows and Anderson(c) vs Enzo and Cass vs Sheamus and Cesaro vs The Hardy Boyz(Matt and Jeff) (Ladder Match at WrestleMania 33)

A sensational visit down the memory lane.

Hardy Boyz is definitely a legendary team. Their matches during the first decade of 21st century against some of the other teams are often regarded among the best of all time. The Hardy Boyz had just wrestled for ROH the night prior to WrestleMania. No one expected them to appear at Wrestlemania the next day, let alone win the titles in a match they helped innovate.

Kudos to the New Day as well for building up the suspense before announcing Matt and Jeff as the fourth team to an enormous reaction from the crowd. Along with the other three teams, who were in shock and awe, Hardy Boyz took a trip down the memory lane and gave the performance of a lifetime. Ladders were used as a weapon, wrestlers were knocked down from the ladder and finishing moves were hit in quick succession for the next 10 minutes.

Matt hit a Twist of Fate on Anderson from the top of the Ladder, Jeff climbed the ladder again to hit a Swanton Bomb on Cesaro and Sheamus placed on a ladder before Matt finally scaled the ladder to finally unhook the belts to cap off a remarkable return.

#3. The Dudley Boys(Bubba Ray and D-Von)(c) vs Edge and Christian vs The Hardy Boyz(Matt and Jeff) (Triangle Ladder Match at WrestleMania 2000)

The perfect start to an unforgettable trilogy.

The beginning of probably the best trilogy of matches in the tag team division, the Triangle Ladder match at WrestleMania 2000 was the only bright spot in a rather disappointing WrestleMania. Edge and Christian had been feuding with The Hardy Boyz for a long time, including their first ladder match at No Mercy in 1999. The addition of The Dudley Boys not only added a third element to the feud but also increased the buzz of the match as the Tag Team Titles now became the center of attention.

The first of the three main matches on the show, this contest was a chaotic sequence of events for almost 23 minutes. Right from the opening bell, the match was an epilogue to the hardcore battle royale as ladders were introduced from the word go. The match was full of spectacular moments - Edge speared Jeff off the top of the ladder, The Dudley's hit consecutive 3-Ds on both Edge and Christian and The Dudley's introduced tables and proceeded to slam both Hardy's through the tables.

The moment of the match came when Jeff hit a Swanton Bomb on Bubba Ray through a table from a Ladder outside the ring. With a table placed between the ladders inside the ring, Edge and Christian knocked down Matt to unhook the belt and become the Tag Team Champions for the first time.

#2. The Dream Team(Brutus Beefcake and Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine)(c) vs The British Bulldogs(Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid) (WrestleMania 2)

The epitome of a phenomenal tag team match.

WrestleMania 2 is remembered more for its flaws than its success. An event that was supposed to make Wrestlemania a brand ended up being probably the most negatively received WrestleMania of all time. The awkward three location concept, the horrendous Piper v Mr T boxing bout and the snooze fest main event that was only planned to show off Hulk's strength, WrestleMania 2 was a big blunder on the part of WWE.

However, even during that disaster, WWE presented arguably their best conventional, one-fall tag team match in the history of WrestleMania as The Dream Team faced The British Bulldogs at the Rosemont Horizon.

The two teams had been feuding for over 6 months over the tag team titles, with The British Bulldogs losing various matches due to disqualifications or outside interference. Hence, it made sense to have them to culminate their feud with a blockbuster match at Wrestlemania, and they delivered for sure. In a memorable sequence of events, Smith sent Valentine into the turnbuckle where he crashed with Kid and got knocked down, allowing Smith to pin The Hammer to win the titles and finish their rivalry.

#1. The Dudley Boys(Bubba Ray and D-Von)(c) vs Edge and Christian vs The Hardy Boyz(Matt and Jeff) (Tables, Ladders and Chairs match at WrestleMania X-Seven)

The best match from the best WrestleMania of all time.
Ad

The fact that this is the second match between this trio of teams to feature on this list is enough evidence that they were the greatest teams in the history of WWE. One year after their impressive ladder match, the three teams were again facing each other. Having ripped their bodies apart in the first ever Tables, Ladders and Chairs match at Summerslam 2000, it was time for the three teams to finally wrap up this series of matches with a final showdown at the biggest event in the history of WWE and what better way to do this than a rematch to their Summerslam encounter - A TLC Match.

Slotted on the card after the Father-Son street fight, these team brought the house down in Houston with their impeccable performance. The interference from Spike Dudley, Rhyno and Lita, each of whom hit their finishing moves, added more excitement to the match. Tables were broken, chairs were bent as the three teams put on a slobber knocker for almost 15 minutes. The last sequence saw a series of memorable moments as Jeff hit a Swanton Bomb through tables on Spike and Rhyno and Edge hit a spectacular spear off the ladder on to a hanging Jeff.

With Bubba and Matt on the top of the ladder, Rhyno knocked the ladder down, sending both through a pair of tables, allowing Edge and Christian to win the match for the second straight year. On a night which had Austin v Rock II and Shane v Vince, it was this group of young superstars who stole the show with the greatest TLC match in the history of WWE.
