It is not the wrestler’s talent that always takes him ahead in his career as his gimmick also plays a crucial role in putting him over. In today’s day and age, however, a good character is not enough. A wrestler requires some merchandisable outfits as well.

There have been many superstars whose gimmicks have been based on their outfits or masks like Kane and Rey Mysterio and many others whose outfits became their identity, like The Undertaker’s black trench coat or Ric Flair’s furry robes.

But, not every wrestler is fortunate enough to be blessed with a great character or even a wearable outfit. Some wrestlers have had their most embarrassing moments on screen due to some outrageous outfits. Here then are top 10 worst outfits ever worn by wrestlers:

#10 Zack Ryder

Ryder has been one of the most entertaining stars of recent times. Be it his YouTube show or his in ring gimmicks, he has kept the fans engaged with his antics. What adds to his character is his bright coloured outfits that help in conveying his “hyped-up” persona better.

But, Ryder did commit a fashion faux pas when introduced his half-shorts-half-tights look. Fans should be grateful to whoever decided to make him drop these pants and gave him some sensible ring gear.

#9 Matt Hardy

To attain longevity in the wrestling business one needs to constantly reinvent himself with character alterations or even a new gimmick altogether. However, Matt Hardy’s attempt to reinvent himself and portray a “broken“ character has fallen flat.

His weird hairdo makes him look as if he just received an electric shock and that fake accent that he has developed just doesn't do anything to add on to his character apart from making him sound ludicrous.

#8 The Shockmaster

Fred Ottman’s career will always be plagued by his funny debut as The Shockmaster. He was supposed to debut in WCW as a fan favorite alongside Sting, Dustin Rhodes, and Davey Boy Smith. But, during his entrance he tripped and fell through the wall that he was supposed to break.

This happened during a live telecast and made the other wrestlers chuckle. What made this even funnier was his outfit, a purple Storm Trooper mask covered in glitter, jeans and puffy jacket made him look like a Storm Trooper who had gone rogue and refused to control his urge to eat.

#7 High Energy

Well this the pair of Owen Hart and Koko B. Ware were given an apt name – High Energy. But, what was appalling about the team was their outfit.

Blue and yellow coloured loose pants coupled with pink and green shirts that bore generous checked patches made them look as if their outfits were stitched from the waste cloth left with a cock-eyed tailor.

Though their paring was perfect, their outfit made these legends look preposterous.

#6 Bastion Booger

WWE has a knack of coming up with strange names and sometimes these names are embarrassing. Bastion Booger was one such name. His character was of an unkempt gluttonous man whose last name literally meant “nasal mucus”.

On top of an embarrassing name, he was given too small grey singlet to give the audience and appearance of a hunchback. However, his character was an utter failure due to poor in-ring work, though it might have saved Mike Shaw from further embarrassment.

#5 Max Moon

Max Moon was supposedly an intergalactic grappler who was billed from “Outer Space”. Unfortunately, he never got over with the fans. Only thing the fans registered about the character was his lame outfit.

The outfit, with all its pyrotechnics and circuits, looked as if it was stitched together after its pieces (rather components) were purchased from end of season’s sale at a scrap yard. Reportedly, WWE spent nearly $13,000 on the purchase of the outfit. One may wonder who approves such gimmicks in the WWE (Vince?)

#4 Goldust

Goldust is truly bizarre. His gimmick really trod on the fine line between creative liberty and vulgarity in the 90’s. During those years, he portrayed his character so well that people started to question his sexual orientation.

One of those was a bondage gimmick with Luna Vachon. Where he was gagged and chained; he even started wearing a metallic bra. Though the outfit suited his promiscuous character, it was just shocking to see someone walk out like that.

#3 Naked Mideon

Somehow, the WWE thought that having a streaker gimmick would work well with the fans, but it did not. Dennis Knight who was a former member of the Ministry of Darkness as Mideon was the unlucky guy to be chosen to play Naked Mideon.

Well, as the name suggests, the guy was almost naked, wearing not except a pair of boots, a fanny pack and thongs (Thank God for that!) to cover his privates.

Nobody knows why this gimmick was thought to be worthy of air time and frankly, nobody would even like to know.

#2 Mantaur

It’s a Bull, It’s a Man, No!! It’s Mantaur. Well, the person that gave birth to this character was confused about what he had to create.

He entered the ring wearing a bull mask that covered half his body and his in-ring attire just consisted of a brown suit and black painted eyes. May God bless the person who did not envision horns on the character. Still, it was one of the most badly conceptualized gimmicks with a horrendous costume.

#1 Giant Gonzalez

To airbrush rippling muscles on a tall (7’ 7” Tall!) and lanky guy is never a good idea. Especially attaching bushy hair on the crotch area is ridiculous. But, WWE creative obviously thought otherwise.

Giant Gonzalez’s only claim to fame was his match with The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 9. He was supposed to be a challenger to the “Deadman”, but he could only be remembered as someone with pathetic wrestling skills and an outfit that made him look like a poor man’s Bigfoot.
