WWE Clash of Champions 2020 Preview: Popular Champion to possibly lose title, Huge return to set-up legendary Hell in a Cell match? (27th September, 2020)

Welcome to the WWE Clash of Champions 2020 Preview! As we approach the post-summer period of the COVID-era, things continue to get interesting in the world of WWE.

Clash of Champions 2020 will be another fun PPV and while the card isn't the most stacked, we fully expect an entertaining show. Here's what you need to look forward to!

#9. Drew McIntyre (c) vs Randy Orton - Ambulance match WWE Championship at Clash of Champions 2020

For Drew McIntyre, the COVID-era of WWE has been perhaps the best run of his career. While there may not have been a crowd to use as a measuring stick, he's held the most important role of any superstar in WWE from WrestleMania up until Clash of Champions 2020.

Randy Orton is the one he faced at SummerSlam 2020 and he beat the 13-time World Champion in what appeared to be a stroke of luck. One night later, he was viciously assaulted by Randy Orton, indirectly setting up their Clash of Champions 2020 match, but Keith Lee's debut and involvement saw him defeat Randy Orton at Payback before falling short one night later to Randy Orton in a #1 contender's match to determine Drew McIntyre's Clash of Champions 2020 opponent.

Drew McIntyre managed to get his revenge in a big way by hitting repeated Claymore kicks upon his return and an arrival in an ambulance seemingly cemented the fact that their Clash of Champions 2020 encounter would be an Ambulance match.

It looks to be the perfect time for Randy Orton to finally become WWE Champion for the 14th time in his career and at Clash of Champions 2020, that's exactly what we expect to happen in the Ambulance match.

Will Drew McIntyre continue his legendary reign or will Randy Orton make it World title #14 at Clash of Champions 2020?

#8. Bayley (c) vs Nikki Cross - SmackDown Women's Championship match at Clash of Champions 2020

Nikki Cross has another shot at the gold

Will Nikki Cross finally realize her singles Championship potential at Clash of Champions 2020? We're closing in on two weeks to a full year since Bayley held the SmackDown Women's Championship. If you ignore the forgettable 4-5 day Championship reign that Charlotte Flair had in between, Bayley has essentially been the SmackDown Women's Champion for close to 500 days.

She faces a tough challenge in Nikki Cross, who she has defeated multiple times. We fully expect Bayley to retain once again at Clash of Champions 2020, but this time around, she could be assaulted by the returning Sasha Banks, setting up a potentially legendary Hell in a Cell encounter.

The timing of it all is perfect and Clash of Champions 2020 could be where it's set up.

#7. Asuka (c) vs Zelina Vega - RAW Women's Championship

Just another day at the office for The Empress

We're a bit disappointed that this match was bumped to the Clash of Champions 2020 Kickoff show. Since this is Zelina Vega's first legitimate singles title shot, it could have been an encounter put on the main card.

Either way, this match is one where the RAW Women's Champion Asuka will be heavily favored. After Asuka defeated the experienced Mickie James in a weird finish, Zelina Vega comes as a different challenge. However, this looks like a one-sided match for the Champion waiting to happen at Clash of Champions 2020.

#6. Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs The Lucha House Party - SmackDown Tag Team Championship at Clash of Champions 2020

Will we see more dissent?
Ad

Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura have impressed at Clash of Champions 2020 but they haven't had to face the same level of competition or adversity that the Champions before them had to in the past.

The Lucha House Party has had trouble brewing from within and Kalisto could be on the verge of getting ejected from the group. Will they able to be a single unit at Clash of Champions 2020 and achieve tag team success?

#5. Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler (c) vs Ruby Riott & Liv Morgan - WWE Women's Tag Team Championship

Who will walk out victorious?
Ad

If anything, Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan have proven that they work better as a unit than individually. They have a big opportunity in their hands to win their first titles since signing with WWE at Clash of Champions 2020 and they could have a big chance of winning it.

While Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler have both had successful singles careers, nothing about their chemistry suggests that they're going to be title holders for the long run.

It's only a matter of time before we see the dissent and don't be surprised to see new Women's Tag Team Champions crowned at Clash of Champions 2020.

#4. The Street Profits (c) vs Andrade and Angel Garza - RAW Tag Team Championship at Clash of Champions 2020

For the hundredth time.
Ad

We're admittedly not excited about this Clash of Champions 2020 encounter. The original RAW Tag Team title match for WrestleMania 36, things changed and we've since seen the match happen on numerous occasions.

The Street Profits have continued to dominate the feud in what's been a shallow tag team division on RAW this year. At Clash of Champions 2020, the duo will look to beat the two rising stars once again to put an end to their rivalry.

#3. Bobby Lashley (c) vs Apollo Crews - United States Championship

A Payback rematch
Ad

At Clash of Champions 2020, Apollo Crews will look to get back the United States title from Bobby Lashley. While the odds aren't in his favor, we could see this being the match where RETRIBUTION gets themselves involved as they've had a clash of heads with The Hurt Business.

RETRIBUTION hasn't made a heavy presence on PPV yet, but they could do so at Clash of Champions 2020. If not, we can see Bobby Lashley retaining the United States title.

#2. Jeff Hardy (c) vs AJ Styles vs Sami Zayn - Ladder match Winner Take All for the Intercontinental title at Clash of Champions 2020

Match of the night waiting to happen?
Ad

When talking about how the RAW Tag Team title match is the least exciting on the Clash of Champions 2020 card, this match is potentially the most exciting one. The Intercontinental title picture has revolved around a few men since WrestleMania 36, with the only title holders being Sami Zayn, AJ Styles, and now Jeff Hardy.

Sami Zayn was inactive after WrestleMania 36 and was stripped of the title, with AJ Styles stepping up and winning it since then. A couple of days before SummerSlam 2020, AJ Styles lost the title to Jeff Hardy, which is what set up the return of Sami Zayn.

The build to Clash of Champions 2020 has seen Jeff Hardy's legitimacy as the Intercontinental Champion questioned, primarily by Sami Zayn who never lost the title. As a result, he has been carrying the Intercontinental title over his shoulders and at Clash of Champions 2020, we will have an undisputed Champion crowned in a ladder match.

Will the WWE legend Jeff Hardy prevail to retain the title? Or could he lose it as quickly as he won it?

#1. Roman Reigns (c) vs Jey Uso - Universal Championship match at Clash of Champions 2020

This is more than just a title match.
Ad

This is another bout that we're incredibly excited about for Clash of Champions 2020. We're not sure if this is going to be the main event, but it will be Roman Reigns' first Universal Championship defense.

Jey Uso won the opportunity to become the #1 contender for the Universal Championship at Clash of Champions 2020 after Roman Reigns insisted that his cousin take the place of the injured Big E, who was originally scheduled to compete for the title opportunity.

This encounter at Clash of Champions 2020 is for more than just the title. As we saw on the SmackDown go-home show, it's to determine who the Tribal Chief of the Anoa'i family is. It's about the blood that the two cousins share and representing one of the most decorated and celebrated families in wrestling history.

Roman Reigns has made it clear that only he can stand on top of the tribe and after Jey Uso questioned him, he was met with a stunning attack. The odds will favor the Champion, but can Jey Uso give Roman Reigns a run for his money at Clash of Champions 2020?
