WWE News: Finn Balor called out by former WWE Champion

What's the story?

Finn Balor defeated Andrade at WWE Super ShowDown in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

Now that the rivalry between the two men is seemingly over, Randy Orton has taken to Twitter to express his interest in challenging Balor for his title.

In case you didn't know…

Since regaining the Intercontinental Championship from Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania 35, Finn Balor has been involved in several matches with Andrade and Randy Orton due to the fact that all three men, as well as Ali, represented SmackDown Live in the 2019 men’s Money In The Bank ladder match.

During their multiple encounters in recent weeks, Andrade picked up two non-title victories over Balor, earning himself an Intercontinental Championship opportunity at WWE Super ShowDown.

Balor, who unleashed his “Demon” persona for the event, picked up the victory after following up a top-rope 1916 with his trademark Coup de Grace finisher, which means he is likely to receive a new title challenger in the coming weeks on SmackDown Live.

Elsewhere at Super ShowDown, Orton defeated former Evolution colleague Triple H in a 25-minute encounter which was viewed by many fans as the best match of the night.

The heart of the matter

WWE asked fans on Twitter whether Randy Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens, Finn Balor, Lars Sullivan or Buddy Murphy should answer Aleister Black’s challenge to face him in a match.

Orton initially replied by tagging himself in the tweet, but he then sent a follow-up tweet saying he wants to face Balor.

The former Evolution member will forever be synonymous with WWE’s world titles due to his reigns with the WWE Championship (9-time holder) and World Heavyweight Championship (4-time holder), but his first title win came when he defeated Rob Van Dam for the Intercontinental Championship at Armageddon in December 2003.

What's next?

Finn Balor and Randy Orton have both been left without obvious storylines moving forward after their victories at WWE Super ShowDown, so perhaps “The Viper” will get his wish to challenge for the Intercontinental Championship again in the not-too-distant future.
