WWE News: Former Cruiserweight Champion released from the company

What's the story?

WWE is in the mood to offload talents tonight as the company has announced a host of names that have been released. The latest to join the list is none other than TJ Perkins, who has come to terms with the WWE regarding his departure.

In case you didn't know...

TJ Perkins, real name Theodore James Perkins, was signed up for WWE's first-ever Cruiserweight Classic tournament back in 2016. He eventually went on to defeat Gran Metalik in the finals to become the WWE Cruiserweight Champion.

However, the initial hype fizzled away quickly as WWE failed to capitalize on TJP's momentum as he would drop the title to The Brian Kendrick. TJP suffered a tremendous career downfall and sadly never recovered. Even a heel turn couldn't save his prospects as TJP was relegated to being just an afterthought on 205 Live.

The 34-year-old Superstar has been wrestling ever since he was a teenager and has worked for countless promotions such as Ring of Honor, NJPW, TNA and Pro Wrestling Guerilla (PWG).

The heart of the matter

It's no secret that TJP has been criminally underutilized during his 3-year stint with the WWE. For a superstar who was expected to kickstart the Cruiserweight revolution, WWE didn't provide him with the kind of booking that could have propelled him and the division to greater heights.

Nonetheless, TJP has tons of option outside the realms of the WWE with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) more than ready to hire former WWE talents. A return to TNA maybe?

What's next?

WWE has already confirmed the releases of TJP, Hideo Itami and Tye Dillinger within a span of 15 minutes and we're sure they are not done with the spring clearance just yet.

We at Sportskeeda wish all the outgoing wrestlers all the very best for their future.
