WWE NXT Results: May 8th, 2019
Last week, Matt Riddle and Adam Cole created a lot of tension and would take out their frustrations on each other in tonight's main event. Both men failed in capturing championship gold at NXT TakeOver: New York. With both men looking to get back to winning ways, tonight's matchup was a must win for Cole and Riddle.
We would also see a match between two of the Black & Yellow Brand's best female competitors in Mia Yim and Bianca Belair. Both have been incredibly close when it comes to picking up the NXT Women's Championship. However, with Belair losing multiple championship bouts against the Queen of Spades, the HBIC figured that it was her time now. To get to Baszler, though, she'd have to overcome the Est. of NXT.
Belair brought Yim down to the mat. Both women traded holds, jockeying for position. They looked to show each other respect, but Belair cut Yim off with a cheap shot to the gut. Yim fought back, kicking her in the face and tripping her up for a dropkick to the face.
Yim connected with a series of backhanded strikes followed by a pele kick. In the corner, Belair avoided another rolling kick, forcing Yim to crash and burn into the turnbuckle. Belair kept her in the corner, forcing her boot into her gut. In the middle of the ring, she was dropped with into a neck crank. Yim fought out but was cut off by Belair, dropping across her with a body splash.
Belair chased her around the ring, pelting her with strong forearms to the back. An alley oop dropped Yim face-first on the top turnbuckle, but she managed to kick out. Belair continued the punishment with more strikes. She taunted Yim, but was rolled up. Belair kicked out at one and was rolled up again, this time barely kicking out at two. Back to their feet, Yim locked in a leaping guillotine with body scissors.
Belair escaped with a snap suplex. Yim fought out of a face lock, and countered another body splash by picking her knees up. A clothesline, throat chop, and a kick to the head stunned Belair, allowing the shotgun dropkick to send her into the corner for a rolling kick.
Yim locked in the Tarantula, breaking it before the four count. Belair countered a sunset flip, but the referee caught her hands on the ropes, breaking the fall. Yim rolled her up, but Belair brought it back into the ropes, where she used her hair for leverage, securing the win.
Results: Bianca Belair defeated Mia Yim via pinfall.
The Viking Raiders were shown leaving the Performance Center through backstage footage, where they were blocked from their exit by Jaxson Ryker in his truck. The rest of the Forgotten Sons attacked from behind, and the trio left them laying as they drove off.
Shayna Baszler was seen at the PC helping train Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir. While they were tied up, Io Shirai attacked Baszler from behind. The ring was filled with several trainers and performers in order to break up the brawl.
Raul Mendoza vs Riddick Moss
Riddick Moss made his return to the ring tonight after tearing his Achilles tendon back in 2018. Moss overpowered Mendoza early, but the smaller star tried to use his speed to outmaneuver him. Moss shot him off into the ropes. A handspring backflip sent him over the big man, and he avoided an attack in the ropes, stunning him with an enziguri and sending him across the ring with a springboard hurricanrana.
Mendoza followed up with a running Shooting Star Press. Moss kicked out. Another springboard maneuver allowed Moss to catch him, curling the superstar several times before sending him overhead with a fallaway slam. A shoulder block in the corner took the breath out of Mendoza.
Moss drove Mendoza into the ground with a military press spinebuster, but he kicked out. Moss took time for a water break. He offered Mendoza some, and the luchador knocked it out of his hands. He followed Mendoza into the turnbuckle and was kicked in the legs, sending him into the middle pad face first.
A flying headscissors sent him into the corner again, following that with a step-up enziguri. Moss tried to interrupt a top rope dive, but Mendoza jumped back on the apron, rocking him with another enziguri, sending Moss crashing to the mat. He finished off the returning superstar with a slingshot corkscrew splash.
Results: Raul Mendoza defeated Riddick Moss via pinfall.
Next week, Kushida will return to NXT. On last week's episode, the Time Splitter made his debut on the brand, defeating the Knockout Artist Kassius Ohno with the Hoverboard Lock.
Matt Riddle vs Adam Cole
Riddle wrapped Cole up in a waist lock, bringing him to the ground with several mat slams. He went for the Bromission early, but the former NXT North American Champion squirmed out of it, escaping through the ropes.
Cole came back inside and countered Riddle's wrestling with a stiff back elbow. A headlock was reversed by Riddle, floating over and turning it into a reverse headlock. Back to their feet, Cole shot him off into the ropes, only to be dropped by a shoulder tackle. Riddle read Cole, predicting his movements and dropping on top of him with the Broton. Three gutwrench suplexes later, and Cole was left exhausted in the corner.
He avoided an assault by the King of Bros, taking his leg out from under him and connecting with a boot to the jaw. A figure-4-neck lock wouldn't hold Riddle down for long, as he turned it into a pinfall attempt. Cole broke out and leveled him with a clothesline. Riddle was set up in the corner and beaten down with several right hands. Cole pulled him out and brought him down with a neckbreaker.
Riddle was placed in the Dragon Sleeper, but fought out of Cole's grasp. A back elbow cut off his momentum, dropping him to the ground once again. They stood back up and traded strikes. Cole avoided a high kick, countering with his own. However, Riddle didn't go down, and brought Cole on his head with a deadlift German suplex.
Riddle's combination connected, and he followed up with a pele kick followed by several running attacks in the corner. A running Broton and a kick to the face nearly awarded Riddle the win, but Cole kicked out.
Cole tried to fight out of another deadlift German, but Riddle powered through. Cole escaped a piledriver attempt and caught Riddle coming off the ropes with a kick to the jaw. An ushigoroshi neckbreaker gave Cole a two-count. Cole looked for some more offense, but Riddle countered with a ripcord knee strike.
He attempted the Go To Sleep, but Cole turned himself upwards mid GTS for a backstabber. Riddle kicked out. Riddle and Cole fought up to a standing position. Cole stomped on Riddle's toes, but Riddle turned a superkick into the ankle lock. The Original Bro locked it in strong, then applied the Bromission. Cole escaped but was leveled with a kick to the head. Two fisherman busters hurt Cole, but another neckbreaker nearly finished Riddle off.
After the kickout, Cole was punished with several chest chops. Riddle countered the Panama's Sunrise but was taken out by the Last Shot. Riddle kicked out and struck him with a knee strike followed by a GTS and a powerbomb, finishing the sequence with another knee strike.
Roderick Strong came down at this point, trying to pick up Cole. The ref shooed away Strong while Cole caught a flipping Riddle with a superkick. Riddle broke out of the pinfall and turned it into the Bromission.
Results: Matt Riddle defeated Adam Cole via submission.
After the match, tensions rose between Cole and Strong. Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly attempted to keep the peace, with Fish holding Strong back and O'Reilly keeping Cole away. All four members of the Undisputed Era left the ring, separated and falling apart.
