There were some interesting botches at the 2020 Royal Rumble

WWE Royal Rumble 2020: 5 botches you may have missed

WWE invaded Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, for the 2020 Royal Rumble, which was a show that promised so much but somehow managed to deliver so much more. Andrade retained the United States Championship in his match against Humberto Carrillo, The Fiend took Daniel Bryan to a whole new level and was able to retain the Universal Championship.

Bayley took the fight to Lacey Evans and managed to cheat her way to victory without Sasha Banks at her side, which allowed her to leave with the SmackDown Women's Championship, whilst Becky Lynch finally collected her debt from Asuka and was able to retain the RAW Women's Championship as well.

Charlotte Flair was the shock winner of the Women's Royal Rumble match after she was able to eliminate Shayna Baszler last and Drew McIntyre took the crown in the men's battle royal after taking out Roman Reigns with a Claymore Kick.

A fantastic night of entertainment, but as ever, it was a night that had some interesting botches.

#5 Bobby Roode falls over

Ad

The opening match of the night on the main Royal Rumble show saw Roman Reigns looking to take down King Corbin in a Falls Count Anywhere match. The feud between Reigns and Corbin has been going on for a while now and after being covered in dog food, Reigns wanted some revenge.

Of course, Bobby Roode and Dolph Ziggler involved themselves in the match and took advantage of the no-disqualification stipulation, which meant that The Usos had to come and aid their cousin as well.

It was as part of a brawl with The Usos that Bobby Roode actually fell over, and because he wasn't supposed to, one of the Usos had to pick him up and then continue the move set with him.

#4 The Women's Royal Rumble match

When there so many women in one match, there are always going to be combustible elements. It was made public knowledge that the women of WWE were all in Houston last night to take part in a rehearsal for the match but that wasn't enough to ensure the match wasn't filled with botches.

Many of the botches that came in the women's Rumble match were only slight errors, Liv Morgan failed to spear Lana, Sarah Logan tripped over and missed the move she was attempting, while Tamina Snuka managed to slip in Dana's hair and almost fall over completely.

Mighty Molly was one of the biggest veterans in the match and even she had a few wobbles, mainly when she slipped after a clothesline and almost fell on the floor. It is perhaps worth mentioning that Beth Phoenix wasn't supposed to hit her head on the ring post when she was wrestling with Bianca Belair either since this then cut her head open and left her covered in blood for most of the match.

Despite the botches, this was one of the most entertaining women's Rumble matches to have ever taken place.

#3 Lacey Evans almost falls out of the ring

Lacey Evans has improved so much throughout her time on SmackDown and deserved the push towards the SmackDown Women's Championship. This time last year, Evans was one of the first women in the Rumble match and botched a number of moves with Natalya, but she was able to show how much she had progressed in a year when she stepped in the ring against Bayley.

Evans came up short in her quest to become the SmackDown Women's Champion, but there were parts of the match that were slightly botchy. She almost fell out of the ring at one point but was able to save herself with her feet. She then pulled herself up onto the ropes and tried to springboard, but when she did, she lost her balance.

This meant that Evans tripped and managed to land on her feet in the ring so she hit Bayley with a forearm, which presumably wasn't the move that she was supposed to hit, but at the time was the only one she could from that angle.

#2 Asuka misses the kick

Ad

The RAW Women's Championship match was one of the highlights of the night as Becky Lynch defended her title against Asuka. One year ago, Asuka forced Lynch to tap out to the Asuka Lock ahead of the Women's Royal Rumble, which The Man went on to win. A lot has changed in a year since and this time, it was Asuka who was tapping out and Lynch was able to successfully retain her title.

The Empress of Tomorrow had been pushed hard heading into the Royal Rumble and many fans expected her to pick up the win over the Champion when the title was on the line, but The Man was a tough opponent on the night.

It was a fantastic match that showed why Lynch has been pushed into such a prominent position but there was a slight botch at the mid-way point. It was only a small botch, but when Lynch and Asuka were on the apron exchanging blows, Asuka missed the kick on Lynch so she was forced to double back and kick her for a second time.

#1 Men's Royal Rumble match

Ad

The men's Royal Rumble match main-evented this year's Royal Rumble event and it was one of the most entertaining battle royals that the company has put together. Brock Lesnar came out at number one and then proceeded to eliminate 13 men to tie the record with Braun Strowman when it comes to Rumble eliminations. Interestingly, The Monster Among Men was one of the men that Lesnar was able to eliminate.

The match was also full of surprises, including Edge, MVP, and NXT stars Matt Riddle and Keith Lee, but in the end, it was Drew McIntyre's night. The former NXT Champion was able to eliminate Roman Reigns to secure a Championship match at WrestleMania, but as ever, the match had a few interesting mistakes.

Brock Lesnar tripped over when he tried to chase Elias into the ring, Aleister Black missed his spot with Seth Rollins, WWE cut to the crowd when Edge made his way to the ring and didn't cut back in time to see him actually get into the ring. This meant that Edge's first spear on return wasn't actually on camera, which was shocking since the WWE Universe had waited for years to witness this.
