Does the company have a long term plan between these two men?

WWE SmackDown: 5 reasons why Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan teamed up again

Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns teamed up once again this week after Bryan tried to intervene and save the latter from a two-on-one beatdown at the hands of the 'King' Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura.

The angle worked well, and the company booked a tag team match for later on in the night which saw Bryan pin Nakamura to pick up the victory.

The closing moments of the show were similar to the end of their tag team match at Hell in a Cell. Reigns and Bryan shook hands before exiting.

This showed that the two men were on the same page and the company could be looking to build upon this in the next few weeks.

In this article, we will look at the five reasons why Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan teamed up once again to take on the heels.

#1 To give a meaningful segment

Reigns suffered a beat down during his Intercontinental Championship match against Shinsuke Nakamura

Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan competed at Hell in a Cell in a tag team match where they formed an unlikely team to take on Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. The two men were successful in overcoming their opponents and put an end to their rivalry.

Now that the WWE Draft is over, it seemed like both men were without any direction or feuds at hand. This was obviously a problem for the company, as the WWE Championship is held by Brock Lesnar who is already engaged in a feud whereas two top babyfaces had nothing major to do on the brand.

The angle allowed them to first have Roman Reigns compete at the beginning of the night and also test a potential long-term rivalry between the two men.

At the end of the night, Bryan pinned Nakamura which has now opened up a lot of opportunities for the company. SmackDown can now focus on building Nakamura vs. Bryan for the Intercontinental Championship, while they can give Reigns someone like Corbin to focus on.

#2 To give Daniel Bryan more screen time before Crown Jewel

Daniel Bryan was not part of any storylines before Friday night

There is no denying that Daniel Bryan is one of the biggest WWE Superstars of this generation. The underdog defied all odds to become one of the biggest names in the industry.

During the previous Crown Jewel event, Bryan was set to take on AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. He had earned the position after defeating The Miz at WWE Super Show-Down.

However, before Crown Jewel could even take place, the two men got in a heated exchange which led to their match taking place a week early on an episode of SmackDown. This was originally done as Bryan had refused to travel to Saudi Arabia due to some controversies.

Keeping that in mind, it’s safe to assume that Bryan won’t be making the trip to Saudi Arabia once again this year as he has still not been advertised for the event, nor has he been declared as a part of any match.

Therefore, the company may be keeping that Superstar in the loop on television since SmackDown has moved to FOX and would require the top stars to continue competing so that the ratings remain up before the big event.

Last year, Bryan won the WWE Championship after Crown Jewel and just before Survivor Series in a shocking victory. WWE could be planning something similar for the Superstar either before or after PPV.

#3 To provide a solid main event

The fans got to watch four huge Superstars battle in the main event

SmackDown opened up to a great match between Roman Reigns and Shinsuke Nakamura which not only showed how the mid-card scene has evolved for the brand but also proved that Roman Reigns has drastically improved over the past few months.

As the night progressed, we saw the women of SmackDown get a chance to prove themselves and their Champion to go in detail about her new character.

The tag teams of SmackDown battled in a great match which displayed the fun aspect of the Blue brand, and Braun Strowman was once again fed a former Champion who suffered the wrath of 'Monster Among Men'.

What was lacking during the night was a solid main event booking which was unclear until the show began. After Bryan tried to rescue Roman Reigns from Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura, the main event scene became clear.

On a night where the SmackDown Women’s Champion did not compete, and the WWE Champion and his challenger were not present at all, it was good that WWE had these four Superstars to end the night on a high note.

#4 A future tag-team?

This could be the beginning of something special
Ad

Whenever a brand has too many top stars, it becomes difficult for the company to keep everyone relevant for an extended period.

Shinsuke Nakamura was not getting much television time for months before he won the Intercontinental Championship, and his United States Championship reign was mostly forgettable. But now that he has been paired up with Sami Zayn, things have gotten better for him and the Superstars who have competed against him.

Brock Lesnar is holding the WWE Championship and already has a challenger for the title. We could see that angle run on for some weeks or even months to come.

With that in mind, the company may be looking to pair Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan for some time to come. We have seen the company pair up former Champions in tag teams before, like John Cena with Shawn Michaels and The Miz, and Eddie Guerrero with Batista.

The company might take the same route with Reigns and Bryan for some time, and build them up as potential contenders to The Revival’s SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Add the aspect of Bayley turning heel and younger fans wanting to turn to new role models, it could work great for the company.

This could prove to be fruitful for some time, and give the two big names something major to do before they hand the titles over to someone like Heavy Machinery.

#5 To plant the seeds for a future rivalry

Will we see an explosive rivalry between the two men down the line?

What’s better than having two top Superstars go against each other? Having two top Superstars join forces and take everyone out alongside the constant threat of one turning on the other at some point.

Fans have been wondering when Daniel Bryan will betray Roman Reigns, even though he recently turned face. By putting both men on the same page, the excitement has multiplied for the fans.

If the company plans to keep these two Superstars together, it will work extremely well in favor of the brand and the network. Having two men who’ve defied all odds to return to the ring and compete the way they do can really help the Blue brand.

Every time they take to the ring together, they resemble a ticking timebomb and give fans more reasons to tune in to watch a match featuring this interesting team.

Whenever the time is right, the company can pull the trigger and give fans a huge rivalry between them which can have the potential to run on for months, similar to the feud between Samoa Joe and AJ Styles.
