WWE Super ShowDown: 5 Reasons why Goldberg defeated The Fiend clean to become the new Universal Champion

I sense that a lot of you are upset right now, and I am not surprised that you are. The Fiend is arguably the best creation that WWE has come up with in the recent past, and honestly, for him to succumb to a 50+ man in this manner is very unusual.

And yet, in this article, I shall try and make sense of it with 5 points that make sense, at least in my mind. Be sure to chime in and let me know what you may think of it and whether you think Vince McMahon and Bruce Prichard were correct in booking such a title change.

Be sure to chime in whether you agree or disagree with my assessment. I am certain that everyone has a point of view about what just transpired.

And with that in mind, I present my 5 points.

#5 To set up a feud with Roman Reigns

There are enough rumors doing the rounds about the next thing that Goldberg will be involved in and that is a feud with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. This is a contest between two bulls, both of whom are known for delivering devastating spears. And even though Roman Reigns is cheered more than he is booed these days, him defeating The Fiend to become the Universal Champion at WrestleMania would have gotten him booed.

And yet, if Roman Reigns were to dethrone Goldberg to become the WWE Universal Champion, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, as far as fans are concerned. This is one of the major reasons why Goldberg was chosen, at the age of 53 to become the brand new Universal Champion. It's unfortunate for The Fiend but it all fits into WWE's long term plans.

#4 To protect the Jackhammer

A certain section of the fans dubbed the smarks or smart marks (you and I may very well be among them) know that Goldberg isn't necessarily Ric Flair in the ring, and that he has to be carried by his opponent more often than not. But there is a vast population that still loves and cherishes Goldberg and may be lapsed fans who will tune in to watch the show, now that Goldberg is Champion again.

It is very clear if you look at WWE as an organization, that they do not merely wish to appease the fans that they have, but grow their fanbase. Goldberg is a marketable name and also a familiar name, who will certainly connect with a lot more people than The Fiend will, at the moment.

And for the same reason, unlike Seth Rollins' curb stomp, WWE couldn't have Goldberg's finisher seem absolutely meaningless. If nothing else, WWE has a long-term deal with Saudi Arabia and one assumes that Goldberg will be on the cards for various appearances in the near future, so after kicking out of multiple spears, the Jackhammer needed to be protected by the company.

#3 The Fiend is certain to be in a big feud soon

As much as one may lament the fact that The Fiend is no longer the WWE Universal Champion, the truth of the matter is that he is definitely not going to fall down the ranks anytime soon. Whether his next feud is against Hulk Hogan or indeed against someone like John Cena, The Fiend is going to be involved in high-profile situations.

John Cena will be on SmackDown this very week and thus The Fiend and him could get into an altercation in a little more than 24 hours. And honestly, John Cena will be a much better opponent for The Fiend than Goldberg, because Cena can work good matches and long matches too.

There is no way at all that after the time and investment that the company has put into building this character, that The Fiend will fall by the wayside anytime soon. It's just that Goldberg's charm lies in him being bulletproof and he was a victim of the circumstances and the situation.

#2 To cause outrage

Why would a company intentionally cause outrage among its fans and have them be vocal on social media, you very rightfully ask?! And the answer is simple. WWE is essentially a TV show, and every good show has a cliffhanger that draws you in to see what the next step is, and more often than not, the cliffhanger is quite unpopular.

Whether you end a television season with a crazy man with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire bashing one of the central characters' skull in, or whether a wight dragon comes to life, no good cliffhanger is one that makes people happy.

In fact, if you cast your mind back to when Goldberg beat Kevin Owens, people were similarly outraged believing wrongly that Owens' career was done for good. And yet, Kevin Owens is very much in the thick of things, to this very day in the company.

In some ways, this is WWE winking at the fans, telling them that they don't know the outcome as well as they believe they do.

#1 Because Goldberg is certainly a huge star outside the United States

So, I hail from India and the last time WWE had put together a live event in my country, Triple H went up against Jinder Mahal in a match where everyone was certain that The Game would put over the younger star. And yet, Triple H was the man who came out victorious in the contest against the Modern Day Maharaja.

The reason that was thrown around is that outside the United States, where the company does not tour nearly as often, WWE legends are revered and respected to a great degree. Had Goldberg won the title in the United States for instance, chances are that there wouldn't be a deafening pop celebrating his win as we heard, but he would be drowned in a sea of jeers following the match.

Like it or not, a lot more people across the world know who Goldberg is than The Fiend, and this is especially true for markets where WWE does not tour nearly as often.
