Angels reliever Middleton facing Tommy John surgery
Keynan Middleton will require surgery on an elbow injury, in a blow to the Los Angeles Angels.
Los Angeles Angels reliever Keynan Middleton will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.
Middleton, 23, underwent an MRI exam on Monday following Sunday's game against the Minnesota Twins after only 12 pitches because of what manager Mike Scioscia described as right elbow discomfort.
The right-hander came off the DL last Thursday and pitched scoreless innings that day and Saturday.
He has six saves in 16 appearances with a 2.04 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 17.2 innings.
MEDICAL UPDATE: After initial diagnosis and second opinion, it has been recommended that Keynan Middleton undergo UCL reconstruction. Keynan will meet with team doctors this evening to discuss timeline and formal plan of care. We will update with more information when appropriate— Angels (@Angels) May 18, 2018
In Middleton's previous stint on the DL, Cam Bedrosian and Jim Johnson recorded saves for the Angels but it was Justin Anderson closing out Monday's win.
