Major League Baseball Trade History

The concept of player trades in baseball was not something that happened. The first trade or as it was known as the swap happened in 1886 between the Cincinnati Red Stockings and St. Louis Browns. The Cincinnati Red Stockings of the American Association decided the trade by sending rookie catcher Jack Boyle and $400 (equivalent to roughly $9,700 today) to the St. Louis Browns in exchange for outfielder Hugh Nicol on November 15, 1886. Boyle had a long 13 year career, however, he didn't make a significant impact with the Browns. He had also played for teams such as the Chicago Pirates, New York Giants, and Philadelphia Phillies. The trade seemed to have been in the Red Stockings' favor as Nicol would go on to steal 321 bases over the next three seasons.

What is MLB Trade and how it works?

In Major League Baseball, a trade is a transaction where teams exchange players to remake their rosters. They also do it in order to fulfill specific needs a team might have. Trades can only involve players currently under contract. In certain conditions, players need to provide consent for the transaction. The primary trade window opens shortly after the conclusion of the World Series and closes on July 31. Unlike some other sports, MLB teams cannot trade draft choices, except for competitive balance draft selections, but they can purchase the rights to Rule 5 Draft Picks. Since the 2012 season, a bonus pool system allows teams to trade a specific class of draft picks, with penalties for exceeding allocated thresholds. Trades are subject to approval by the MLB office, and certain components like a "player to be named later" or cash considerations may be included when immediate agreement on specific players is not happening is challenging.

December 9, 1965: The Cincinnati Reds traded Frank Robinson to the Baltimore Orioles for Jack Baldschun, Milt Pappas, and Dick Simpson. The Reds' General Manager believed Robinson had peaked but Robinson went on to play incredibly with the Orioles. He ended up winning the MVP and achieving a Triple Crown in his first season with the team. The trade is often said to be one of baseball's most lopsided deals, given Robinson's exceptional success with the Baltimore Orioles.

April 5, 1972: The Montreal Expos traded Rusty Staub to the New York Mets for Tim Foli, Mike Jorgensen, and Ken Singleton. Staub, known as "Le Grand Orange," had become a fan favorite in Montreal where he excelled on the field. He even embraced the local culture by learning French. The surprising trade stunned the Montreal baseball community. Staub later played for the Mets and Tigers before briefly returning to the Expos in 1979. However, his second stint with the Expos was short-lived, as he played only 38 games before being traded to the Rangers in March of the following year.

December 10, 1984: The Montreal Expos traded Gary Carter to the New York Mets for Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, Herm Winningham, and Floyd Youmans. Carter, who is a beloved figure in Expos history, had an illustrious 11-season tenure with Montreal Expos. He was a seven All-Star, three Gold Glove Awards, and he even contributed significantly to the team's 1981 NL Championship Series run. Carter went on to spend five successful seasons with the Mets, where he became the NL All-Star and even helped the team secure a World Series victory in 1986.

December 5, 1990: The San Diego Padres traded Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter to the Toronto Blue Jays for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez. The trade proved extremely important for the Toronto Blue Jays. This was because Alomar and Carter played crucial roles in the Blue Jays back-to-back World Series wins that occurred in 1992 and1993 respectively. Alomar, who is a future Hall of Famer, had five All-Star selections and Gold Glove Awards winner during his five-year tenure with the team. Meanwhile, McGriff and Fernandez had shorter stints with the Padres before being traded, with McGriff achieving success with the Braves and Fernandez returning to the Blue Jays later in his career.

February 18, 1999: The Toronto Blue Jays traded Roger Clemens, who had recently won his second consecutive AL Cy Young award. He was traded to the New York Yankees for David Wells, Homer Bush, and Graeme Lloyd. Clemens had some hesitancy and even encountered failed negotiations. However, this resulted in a deal without top prospects. Clemens used a trade demand clause and became a key addition for the Yankees in a historic move for the franchise.

February 16, 2004: The Texas Rangers traded Alex Rodriguez to the New York Yankees for Alfonso Soriano. The trade was initially expected to involve the Boston Red Sox but the MLB Players Association rejected a contract restructuring proposal. This led to the Yankees acquiring Rodriguez despite their prior disinterest in him due to the presence of Derek Jeter and Aaron Boone.

November 19, 2012: The Miami Marlins traded Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Emilio Bonifacio, and John Buck to the Toronto Blue Jays for eight players. This major trade followed the Marlin's significant free-agent signings in the previous season. But after a disappointing 69-93 record in 2012, they had to overhaul their roster. The Blue Jays received established players, while the Marlins managed to acquire players which included Henderson Alvarez, Anthony DeSclafani, and Yunel Escobar.

November 20, 2013: The Detroit Tigers traded Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers for Ian Kinsler. Despite Fielder's impressive track record and productivity, the trade proved advantageous for Detroit. As chronic neck injuries led to Fielder's early retirement at the age of 32. In return, Kinsler, who was an All-Star in his first season with the Tigers, contributed quite a bit to the team.

December 9, 2015: The Arizona Diamondbacks traded Dansby Swanson, Ender Inciarte, and Aaron Blair to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Shelby Miller. Despite Miller's All-Star performance in 2015, the Diamondbacks sought to make a move rather than keeping him. The Braves were planning to make the trade painful for the Diamondbacks by acquiring players who were considered integral to their future. This fact was claimed by the Braves President of Baseball Operations John Hart.

December 3, 2018: The New York Mets traded Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista, Justin Dunn, and Jarred Kelenic to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Robinson Canó and Edwin Diaz. The Mariners who were led by general manager Jerry Dipoto opted for a rebuilding strategy following an 89-win season. They were acknowledging the need to strengthen the roster against formidable AL teams. On the other hand, the Mets' new General Manager, Brodie Van Wagenen decided on additions after the team's disappointing performance. The main point of the trade was Canó's contract and his recent suspension added complexity to his future in Seattle.

December 27, 2020: The Tampa Bay Rays traded pitcher Blake Snell to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Luis Patiño, Cole Wilcox, Blake Hunt, and Francisco Mejía. This trade took place within 24 hours, the Padres secured two elite pitchers which included Snell, who had played a crucial role for the Rays in the 2020 World Series. January 7, 2021: The Cleveland Guardians traded star shortstop Francisco Lindor and pitcher Carlos Carrasco to the New York Mets. Lindor, a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner, was 27 at the time and had one year left on his contract. The Mets secured Lindor by signing him to a 10-year contract which had a $341 million extension on the eve of Opening Day. This ensured his presence on the team for years to come.

December 6, 2023: The New York Yankees made a significant move by acquiring superstar outfielder Juan Soto and Trent Grisham from the San Diego Padres, aiming to bounce back from a subpar season. While the deal is yet to be officially confirmed by the clubs, it marks a substantial transaction for the Yankees.
