Tigers take pitcher Mize number one overall in MLB Draft
The Detroit Tigers selected Auburn starting pitcher Casey Mize with the number one overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft on Monday.
Mize, a two-time All-American, has a 10-5 record this season with a 2.95 ERA and dazzled in his most recent start with 11 strikeouts in seven innings.
He became the first SEC pitcher to be selected number one since Vanderbilt product David Price in 2007 to Tampa Bay.
The Tigers already had a deep roster of pitchers in the farm system with top talents such as Franklin Perez, Matt Manning, Beau Burrows and Alex Faedo all expected to become MLB starters. But Mize gives them even more stability for the future.
Mize features an upper-90s fastball with a tough splitter and has the physical makeup of a future elite starter in MLB.
