Hosts Mozambique celebrate their entry in the final

Angola and hosts Mozambique are set to play for gold after they entered the final of the 2013 AfroBasket Women Championship being held at Maputo, Mozambique.

In the low-scoring first semifinal of the championship, defending champions Angola defeated ten-time champions Senegal 46 – 43 to enter the final of the championship.

Senegal took the first quarter 11 – 9, but Angola took the second quarter 13 – 11 to level the score at the halftime.

After the break, Senegal took the third quarter 17 – 8 but Angola stunned the Senegal by taking the last quarter 16 – 4 to enter the final of the championship. Angola skipper Nasiccela Mauricio led her team with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steal.

In the other semifinal, hosts Mozambique defeated Cameroon 61 – 57 to enter the final of the championship. Cameroon took the first quarter 23 – 9.

At the halftime break, Mozambique were trailing by 24-37 points. Mozambique came out strong after the break and won third and fourth quarter 13-08 and 24 – 12 to win the match and set date with Angola for the gold. Mozambique was led in scoring by forward Leia Dongue with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steal.

With the entry to the final of the Championship, Angola and Mozambique also book their ticket to the in the 17th edition of the 2014 FIBA World Cup for women to be held in Turkey.

The final of the championship will be played on 29 September 2013.
