2013 EuroBasket: Second round starts with wins for Latvia, Lithuania and Serbia

Latvia, Lithuania and Serbia won their respective matches in the Day 1 of the second round of the 38th edition of the FIBA Europe Basketball Championship for men, better known as the 2013 EuroBasket.

Group E matches were held on the Day 1 of the second round of the 2013 EuroBasket.

Latvia thrashed Ukraine 85 – 51

In the first match of the DAY 1 of the second round of the 2013 EuroBasket, Latvia thrashed Ukraine 85 – 51. Latvia were too strong for Ukraine as the Latvians took all quarters 24 – 11, 18 – 11, 23 – 10 and 20 – 19 respectively to demolish Ukraine.

Kristaps Janicenoks top scored with 14 points for Latvia while Sergii Gladyr netted 12 points for Ukraine. With the win, Latvia improved its chance of advancing into the quarterfinals of the championship.

Serbia beat Belgium 76 – 69

In another match of the Day 1 of the second round of the championship, Serbia beat Belgium 76 – 69 to climb to the top position in group E. Serbia took first two quarters 19 – 18 and 21 – 18 respectively while Belgium took the third quarter 15 – 14.

But Serbia won the last quarter 22 – 18 to win the match. Nenad Krstic top scored with 17 points for Serbia while Wen Mukubu top scored with 16 points for Belgium. With the loss, Belgium remains at the bottom of the group E.

Lithuania edge past France 76 – 62

In the last match of the Day 1 of the second round of the championship, Lithuania edged past the group E leader France 76 – 62 to climb in the second position in Group E.

Lithuania took the first quarter 16 – 10 while France won the second quarter 17 – 16. After the break, Lithuania won the remaining two quarters 19 – 15 and 25 – 20 to beat France.

Renaldas Seibutis netted 15 points for Lithuania to help them win while Nando De Colo was the top-scorer with 12 points for France. With the loss, France are now in 3rd place in Group E.

With the completion of the Day 1 of the second round of the championship, here is how the Group E standing looks like:

GROUP E:

  1. Serbia: 6 points
  2. Lithuania: 5 points
  3. France: 5 points
  4. Latvia: 4 points
  5. Ukraine: 4 points
  6. Belgium: 3 points

There are 5 teams each in Group E and F in the second round of the 2013 EuroBasket.

Top four teams from both group will advance to the quarterfinals of the championship. Top six teams from 2013 EuroBasket – excluding Spain, as they have already qualified as hosts – will get their ticket to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

24 European nations are participating in the 2013 EuroBasket.
