24th FIBA Asia Champions Cup: ONGC India go down fighting against BC Kapshagay of Kazakhstan

ONGC India, the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) representative, went down fighting against BC Kapshagay (Central Asia Basketball Association representative) of Kazakhstan 79 -72 in the second day of the ongoing 24th FIBA Asia Champions Cup at Amman, Jordan.

In the competitive match, both teams were of equal caliber. BC Kapshagay took the first quarter 25 – 24 to to finish the first quarter with two points lead. BC Kapshagay also took the second quarter 26 – 14 to lay its foundation for the win. Despite ONGC India taking the third and fourth quarter 15 – 12 and 19 – 16 respectively, the second quarter proved too costly for the SABA representative as it lost it’s first match of the championship.

V. Fadeikin top scored for the winners with 22 points. For ONGC India, Vishesh Bhriguvanshi netted 19 points, Yadwinder Singh netted 11 points, Trideep Rai netted 18 points while Amritpal Singh was top scorer for ONGC India scoring 20 points. Riyaz UDDIN also netted 4 points for ONGC India. Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, Yadwinder Singh, Trideep Rai, Amritpal Singh and Muralee Krishna Ravindran were the starters for ONGC India.

Meanwhile, Mahan of Iran thrashed Al Jaish of Syria 91 – 56 in the group A encounter in the second day of the championship.

India’s ONGC, Duhok of Iran, Al Rayyan of Qatar and Kazakhstan’s BC Kapshagay are in Group B while Group A consists of Al Hala (BRN), ASU (JOR), Foolad Mahan (IRI) and Al Jaish (SYR).

The FIBA Asia Champions Cup, previously known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Champions Cup until 2002, is Asia’s premier club level basketball competition, involving the champion clubs of Asian countries. It is organised by FIBA Asia and takes place once a year. A total of 10 professional basketball clubs qualify every year from the sub-zones of FIBA Asia. After Khas Bronchos (MGL) and San Miguel Beermen (PHI) pulled out of this year’s championship, only 8 clubs are participating the 24th edition of the Asia’a premier club level basketball competition.
