In the current triple-double-crazy NBA world, it shouldn't be difficult to understand what a quadruple-double is. Either way, let's get it straight. Similar to a triple-double, a quadruple-double is recorded when a player registers double figures in any four of the five primary stat categories - points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.
Last season, Russell Westbrook, en route to winning the season MVP, recorded a league-record 42 triple-doubles for the year. However, in the 71-year history of the league, there have only been four quadruple-doubles recorded, all by four different players. It's a rare feat and also immensely difficult, thus the small number.
Here we list the player, their opponent, the day and the legacy of the players who recorded this uncommon feat:

#4 Nate Thurmond
Stats: 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 blocks in 45 mins
When: Oct. 18, 1974
Against: Atlanta Hawks
Nate "The Great" Thurmond, famous for his 11-year stint with the Golden State Warriors (1963-1974), registered his quadruple-double while with the Chicago Bulls. He was the first player ever to record a quadruple-double. He needed the game to go to overtime to achieve the feat but he got it done nonetheless.
Thurmond was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985 and was named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1997.
He lost a tough battle with leukemia and died last year. The Warriors, in his recognition, had a #42 strap on their jersey for the rest of their 2016-17 season. His #42 jersey is retired by both the Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
#3 Alvin Robertson
Stats: 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals
When: Feb. 18, 1986
Against: Phoenix Suns
Unlike Thurmond, Alvin Robertson, a San Antonio Spurs' legend, recorded the quadruple-double with steals rather than blocks. Being a wing defender, and quite a reputed one too, that shouldn't come as much of a surprise.
Robertson leads the league's history for most career steals per game - 2.71. The year he recorded his quadruple-double -1986, he was named both the Most Improved Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the year.
He is the only player from this list not to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, however, he was more than accomplished. Over the course of his nine-year career, Robertson was named to four All-Star games and was selected six All-NBA Defensive Teams.
#2 Hakeem Olajuwon
Stats: 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 blocks
When: Mar. 29, 1990
Against: Milwaukee Bucks
Hakeem Olajuwon, a Houston Rockets legend, is the only player in NBA history to win the Defensive Player of the Year, League MVP and Finals MVP in 1994. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008 and eight years later he was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame. Olajuwon played the key role in ensuring the Rockets won back-to-back Championships in 1994 and 1995.
He could have become the only player in league history to record two quadruple-double but he fell just one assist shy of that record-breaking feat. On March 3, 1990, he recorded 29 points, 18 rebounds, 11 blocks and 9 assists against the Warriors.
Nicknamed "The Dream", Olajuwon was such a great player in the post that current league athletes still go to him to learn the tricks of the trade.
#1 David Robinson
Stats: 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 blocks
When: Feb. 17, 1994
Against: Detroit Pistons
David Robinson scored 34 points and then recorded just enough in the other three stats to be the fourth and last player ever to record a quadruple-double. The 1995 league MVP, Robinson was the face of the Spurs' franchise from 1989 to the year the team drafted Tim Duncan. He was also named the Defensive Player of the Year in 1992.
In his 14-year career, Robinson has been named to 10 All-Star games, eight All-NBA teams and eight All-NBA Defensive teams. He has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame twice - in 2008 as a player and in 2010 as a member of the 1992 US Olympic Dream Team.
Robinson was drafted in 1987 but he only joined the Spurs to play in the league in 1989 after serving two years in the United States Navy.
