Big win for ONGC in Federation Cup basketball

Bangalore - Giving a strong second-half performance, ONGC opened their campaign in the 27th Federation Cup basketball tournament with a commanding 83-56 win over South Central Railway here Wednesday.

Boasting of an array of quality players majority of whom were part of the Uttarakhand team, winners of the men’s crown in the recent senior National championship in Ludhiana, trailed 33-39 after two quarters, but came roaring back after the break to stamp their authority.

Also recording a win in the men’s section was Indian Overseas Bank from Chennai who routed Jind District, Haryana, 96-48 after overcoming early resistance.

In the women’s section, Tamil Nadu drubbed Andhra Pradesh 60-20 while Maharashtra overcame a fighting Chattisgarh 73-62 and Kerala edged past hosts Karnataka 85-29 after shrugging off a 10-point deficit at the halfway mark.

Men: ONGC, Uttarakhand 83 (Bhruguwanshi 17, Yadvinder Singh 12, Mohit Bhandri 13, Tridp Rai 16, Riyazuddin 10) beat South Central Railway, Secunderabad 56 (Aniket 08, Pankaj 08). Quarter Scores: 21-21 16-18 20-09 26-08.

Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai 96 (P Rikin 20, Hareesh Kolroth 20, Mihir Pandey 13, Raghu Ram 10) beat Jind Dist, Haryana 48 (Deepak Rathi 23, Vikas Mor 11). Quarter Scores: 28-21, 30-12, 16-05, 22-10.

Women: Tamil Nadu: 60 (Sangeetha 09, Aishwaraya 06, Approva Murlinath 06) beat Andhra Pradesh 20 (Sathya Shravanthi 05). Quarter Scores: 30-09, 08-02, 05-04, 17-05.

Maharashtra 73 (Manisha donge 28, Renu Mourya 18) beat Chattisgarh 62 (Sangeetha Mandal 19, Poonam 10, Sanranjeeth Kaur18). Quarter Scores: 17-19, 22-18, 21-08, 13-17.

Kerala 85 (Jina 29, Rofmy 13, Steffi Nikson 12) beat Karnataka 79 (Savitha 28, Navanitha 26). Quarter Scores: 21-16, 18-33, 22-14, 24-16.
