Kerala beat Southern Railways in National women's basketball

Ahmedabad, Jan 7 (IANS) Kerala women moved to the semifinals of the Federation Cup National Basketball Championship beating Southern Railways 72-62 in extra time Tuesday.

Both teams were seen matching basket for basket till the end of regulation time. The scores were tied at 61 points apiece. Southern Railways were sharp on the field and were seen using a two to one defence. Kerala managed to break through their defence and score five field goals in over time to win the match. Three of those five field goals came from the experienced International player Jeena Skaria. Jeena scored a double-double with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Stephy Nixon scored 15 and Neenumol finished with 14 points for Kerala.

Maharashtra women have topped pool A defeating Gujarat 69-27 and will now fight for the final spot with Delhi Tuesday. Maharashtra so far remained unbeaten in the league stage. After defeating Kerala 76-65 in their first game, they went on to defeat Southern Railways 75-69 Monday. Smruthi R scored 28, Manisha D 17 and Renu M added 15 for the Maharashtra against Railways.

Chhattisgarh topped Pool B beating Karnataka 114-41. They will now face Kerala for a place in the final Thursday. Poonam Chaturvedi scored 27, Pushpa M 17, and Kavita added 15 for Chhattisgarh.
