Miami Heat's retired jersey numbers

The Miami Heat’s retired jersey numbers are as follows:

1. Michael Jordan (23)

   Michael ‘His Airness’ Jordan

   Michael Jeffrey Jordan is one of the most decorated players in basketball. He played a majority of his career with Chicago Bulls as a shooting guard aggregating a total point tally of 32292, 6672 rebounds and 5633 assists.Although Michael Jordan never played for Miami Heat, his jersey number ‘23’ was retired by the then Heat coach Pat Riley in 2002-2003 season as a tribute to Jordan’s career. This was the first jersey that Miami Heat had retired since its inception in 1988.He holds two Olympic gold medals, which he won playing for the national squad of United States of America in Los Angeles (1984) and Barcelona (1992).

   Nicknamed ‘Air Jordan’ and ‘His Airness’, Jordan has been inducted twice in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as an individual in 2009 and as a member of the national squad in 2010.

2. Alonzo Mourning (33)

   Alonzo Harding Mourning started his professional playing career as a center at Charlotte Hornets in 1992, where he played three seasons before moving to Miami Heat in 1995. In his NBA career he scored 14,311 points, 7,137 rebounds and tallied 2,356 blocks.He stayed there for seven seasons before his failing kidney forced him out of the court and out of contract too. He made a return to the American Airlines Arena in March 2005 after a dissatisfied run with the New Jersey Nets, whom he joined as a free agent in 2003 on a four-year deal.In his latter career at Miami Heat, Mourning was nicknamed ‘The Ultimate Warrior’ by the fans, due to steady contribution to the team despite his physical limitations.

   Mourning also won a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics while representing the national team of the United States of America. His number ‘33’ was retired by Miami Heat in March 2009 and was inducted in the Miami Heat Hall of Fame list in 2014.

3. Tim Hardaway (10)

   Timothy Duane ‘Tim’ Hardaway started his professional playing career as a point guard with Golden State Warriors in 1989 and in 1996 he moved to Miami Heat. He played for the Miami Heat from 1996 to 2001, after which he played for Dallas Mavericks (2001-02), Denver Nuggets (2002) and Indiana Pacers (2003)In his NBA career, Hardaway scored 15,173 points with an average of 17.3 per game, had 1,428 steals and tallied 7,095 assists. He scored the second fastest 5,000 points and 2,500 assists in 262 games. The record for the same is held by Oscar Robertson who achieved the same feat in 247 games.He also won a Gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, representing the US national team. His number ‘10’ was retired by Miami Heat in October 2009.

4. Dan Marino (13)

   

   Dan Marino

   Dan Marino is an American Football player, who played for the Miami Dolphins from 1983 to 1999. His jersey number ‘13’ was honoured for his service as a quarterback to the Miami Dolphins (NFL). He was presented with a special Miami Heat jersey by the team and $25,000 was donated to the Marino Foundation.The No.13 jersey is not one of the Miami Heat’s retired numbers and is still available for use by the players.
