Shams Charania provides massive update which could have humongous implications on the future of the NBA

2023 NBA All Star Game
New update could have big implications to the NBA's future.

The Athletic on Monday published a report on an issue that could completely change the NBA, focusing on awards to address one of the league's major issues.

As the NBA and Players Association discuss a new collective bargaining agreement, one new wrinkle is potentially being laid out. Shams Charania reported that the two sides are discussing players needing to hit a minimum requirement of games to be eligible for seasonal awards:

"According to sources with knowledge of both sides of the discussions, while both sides still need to come to an agreement on the number of games that players would need to play in order to qualify for award, the two sides do agree on the concept.
"There's already one precedent that the parties can point to, where a player must appear in at leat 58 games to qualify for the league's scoring title."

Load management has become a growing topic of conversation in recent years, and this change could help lessen the frequency of stars resting throughout the season.

Is the NBA making the right move with this change?

If the two sides can agree on a good number, this could be a big move for the NBA. The league has needed something to add more to the regular season, and this could be a big incentive for players to suit up more.

Getting the right number will be crucial for a move like this. While the goal is to deter excessive levels of load management, injuries are still a factor in this. If a player is sidelined for a stretch because of an actual injury, it shouldn't be their make-or-break of being able to win a seasonal award.

What was once a small issue is now a league-wide problem. Never knowing when a star player is going to play is greatly hurting the perception of the product. More importantly, it might start costing the league revenue.

Time and time again, fans go on social media to complain about a star being scratched late for rest after they bought tickets. It happens all across the league and could have a long-term negative impact.

Since the load management era continues to reach an extreme, commissioner Adam Silver and the NBA have to do something. If this gets approved for the new CBA, it's a step in the right direction of finding a solution.

Awards and accolades are a primary factor in a player's legacy when their career ends. If games played becomes the new marker for an accolade like MVP, we could see a decrease in rest days for stars.
