Steve Nash: A Brief Biography

Stephen John Nash is a Canadian professional basketball coach for the Brooklyn Nets. He was born on February 7, 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The former professional basketball player played in the NBA league from 1996 to 2015 for different teams. Steve played as a point guard throughout his career and was selected NBA Most Valuable Player in 2005 and 2006. Nash is also an eight-time NBA All-Star and seven-time All-NBA Team member.


After playing high school and college level basketball, Steve Nash entered the NBA in 1996. He was 15th overall draft by the Phoenix Suns in the 1996 NBA draft. Later, Nash shifted to the Dallas Mavericks in 1998 but rejoined the Suns in 2004. In 2012, the Los Angeles Lakers drafted him in a sign-and-trade deal with Phoenix. He also represented Team Canada as the youngest player at the Summer Universiade and won a silver medal. Steve Nash started his professional coaching career in September 2020 when he was announced as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

Stephen John Nash was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. His family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan when Nash was only 18 months old. Finally, they settled in Victoria. British Columbia. His father John Nash is English while his mother Jean Nash is Welsh. Steve Nash holds dual citizenship – Canadian and British.


During his childhood days, Nash played ice hockey and football with his younger brother Martin. However, he got fascinated with the game of basketball at the age of 12 and started playing basketball. Once Nash told his mother that one day he would play in the NBA and become a star player. After finishing his schooling, Steve played college basketball from 1992 to 1996 before entering the National Basketball Association.


Steve Nash NBA Journey


Steve Nash started his NBA journey in 1996 when he was selected overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1996 NBA draft. He played only 10.5 minutes per game in his rookie season but increased his playing time incredibly in his second season. In 1998 Dallas Dallas Mavericks traded Nash in NBA draft. He proved himself as a formidable point guard with the Mavericks and became one of the top players shortly.


Nash secured an average of 15.6 points and 7.3 assists each game in the 2000-01 season. He scored a career-high 17.9 points and 7.7 assists per game in the 2001-02 season and secured a spot in the NBA All-Star Game.


Nash returned to the Phoenix Suns in 2004 and performed spectacularly to raise the overall record of the franchise. With Nash included in the team, the Suns won 33 more games than they did the previous season.


In the 2006-07 season, he became the first player since 1990-91 to average 18 points and 11 assists during the regular season. Steve played 81 regular games during the 2007-08 season. They witnessed a strong performance to start the 2009-10 season with 8-1 in their first 9 games. On July 11, 2012, Steve Nash was acquired by the Los Angeles Lakers under a sign-and-trade deal with the Phoenix Suns.


Steve Nash suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left leg in the 2012-13 season due to a collision with Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers). It kept him away from the court for close to seven weeks. During the following season, Nash suffered nerve problems that originated from his leg injury. All these injuries made Nash think about his retirement from the NBA career. In July 2014, he announced that the 2014-15 season would be his last season. Meanwhile, Steve started experiencing back pain that became extreme while lifting luggage.


On March 21, 2015, Steve Nash announced his retirement from the professional NBA career.


Steve Nash Education


Steve Nash attended Mount Douglas Secondary School in Saanich, BC. However, his parents decided to admit Steve to St. Michaels University School following his bad grades in the previous school. Nash started playing rugby, soccer and basketball in this school. He averaged 21.3 points and 11.2 assists each game during his senior season. Also, Nash helped his team to win the British Columbia AAA provincial championship title in his final year in the 1991-92 season. Nash was named the province’s Player of the Year.


Upon completing high school, Steve Nash joined Santa Clara University in 1992 to pursue a graduation in sociology.
