Any form of professional competitive video gaming is considered eSports. Players compete against one another in teams or individually. By the end of 2022, the eSports industry is expected to be worth $1.8 billion. A team's revenue can come from a variety of sources, including broadcast revenue, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and subscriptions.

In 2019, nearly half a billion people watched eSports tournaments and streams. eSports broadcasting on TV is still in its infancy, but major aggregators are experimenting with the industry's viability on traditional cable.

Professional gamers are among the best-paid and best-trained athletes in the world. For instance, the eSports game with the largest tournament prize pool in 2021 was 'DOTA 2,' with a total prize pool of 47.73 million US dollars. According to the FICCI and EY India report, India will have 1.5 million esports players by FY25.
