Vikas Krishan storms into Asian Boxing Championship final after dominant display

Vikas Krishan Yadav made it to the final of the Asian Championships

Vikas Krishan Yadav, the JSW-supported boxer, stormed into the finals of the middleweight category of the Asian Boxing Championship with a convincing 3-0 victory over Iraq’s Waheed Abdulridha in Bangkok on Friday evening.

The 23-year-old Vikas dominated the bout right from the outset and managed to take the first round with a score-line of 27-30. Fighting in the blue corner, Vikas regularly managed to get past the Iraqi boxer’s defence, peppering him with some sharp combinations and picking up points regularly.

“It was an easy fight. I had not expected it to go the way it did. I thought it would be a challenge for me considering his record and his physicality. However, once I had landed a couple of clear punches in the opening minute, I was relaxed and I knew where I wanted to take this bout,” said Krishan immediately after his dominating show. The southpaw said that he was confident that he had the bout locked up by the halfway mark. “In the middle of the second round, I knew I was comfortable. I was in good rhythm, I was getting my opponent to move where I wanted him to,” he said.

Vikas will take on Uzbekistan’s Bektemir Melikuziev in the final. Melikuziev, 19, is a former World Junior Boxing Champion. The Uzbek won the gold medal in the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympics in the 69-kg category. “I have seen him box, he is very talented and I am sure it will be a challenge to fight him. However, after my performances in this tournament, I am pretty confident in my abilities as well,” said Vikas.
