What's the story?
When it comes to making the country proud, Indian sportspersons leave no stones unturned. This time a team of six veterans made the nation proud by clinching the gold medal at the 5th Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship.
In case you didn't know...
This was the 5th edition of Commonwealth Bridge Championship. It was held between February 14 and 18 at the Gold Coast, Australia. This Commonwealth Nations Championship will act as a forerunner to the upcoming Gold Coast Bridge Congress, where present participants will be invited to play.
The heart of the matter
The Indian "A" team was led by renowned bridge player Kiran Nadar. Accompanied by the likes of Keyzad Anklesari, B. Satyanarayana, Rajeshwar Tewari, Jaggy Shivdasani and Sunit Chokshi as teammates. They cruised through to beat the Australian team with utmost finesse.
They beat the Australian team with a score of 103-65, this having been achieved after 11 rounds of negotiation for the qualifying phase that was followed by the knockout stages of the quarterfinals.
Very interestingly, Bridge has been a source of pride for the Indians at the Commonwealth Championship. It must be noted that 12 years ago, India had clinched the gold medal at the 2006 edition of the Championship that was held in Melbourne, Australia. In addition to this, they were also declared the unofficial winners at the Championship held in New Delhi in the 2010 edition.
What's next?
The upcoming Bridge Championship tournament is the Gold Coast Bridge Congress that is being held between February 17 and 24. It is yet to be seen if the Indians will add yet another feather to their cap.
