Bill Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the University of North Carolina to become the football coach for the Tar Heels. The move has earned a lot of attention in both the NFL and college football worlds. On Thursday, analyst Keyshawn Johnson sat down on Fox's "Speak" to discuss the move. He did not take anything away from Belichick and his impressive resume, but he did have some advice for him. He wants Belichick to diversify his coaching staff:"What I would say and I'm just going to say it, he better hire some black coaches."Keyshawn Johnson on practical reasons for Bill Belichick to hire black coachesWhile Keyshawn Johnson believes Bill Belichick should hire black coaches because it is the right thing to do, he also laid out a more practical reason for diversifying his coaching staff. In college football, recruitment is a much bigger part of the job than in the NFL, where Belichick has spent most of his career.Part of the job of a college coach is to recruit high school players, which involves building relationships on the foundation of trust with their families."He better hire some black coaches because you got to go out to the homes and the mamas, gotta convince, not daddy, mommy and auntie that you're going to take care of, no real talk," Johnson said. "He's smart enough, again, I bet he's smart enough to know that. Not one guy coaching the running backs, one guy coaching the receivers. No."This will be the first time Bill Belichick, who spent 24 years with the New England Patriots and brought home six Super Bowl titles, will have to factor recruiting high school players into his hiring process. While NFL recruitment focuses more on college performance by the player and the contract, college recruitment is much more complex and is not solely the job of a general manager.
